FLIPPING THE ESTABLISHED ORDER AND BETTERING THE HAYABUSA'S VAGUE-AT-SPEED FRONT END IN ALL RESPECTS.
INCLUDE THE NEW-GENERATION ESA II ELECTRONICALLY ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION AND THE BMW MOVES FAR AHEAD. AT THE PUSH OF A BUTTON. YOU CAN SET UP THE BIKE FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF RIDING AND A VARIETY OF LOADS. AND FAR FROM BEING A GIMMICK. YOU COME TO MISS IT ON OTHER BIKES. WELL WORTH THE EXTRA £617. HOWEVER. THE BUTTONS THEMSELVES WILL BE CONTENTIOUS AS BMW FINALLY HAS DROPPED ITS OLD THREE-BUTTON INDICATOR SYSTEM FOR A CONVENTIONAL SINGLE LEFT-HAND ONE.

NONE OF THIS COULD PREVENT A VERY OLD-FASHIONED PROBLEM. HOWEVER. ON A TWISTY. DOWNHILL SECTION OF ROAD I HAD TO BACK RIGHT OFF AT ONE POINT BECAUSE OF SEVERE BRAKE FADE. THE K1300 S IS A HEAVY MOTORCYCLE AND REPEATED HAIRPIN BENDS WITH SOME EXUBERANT STOPS WERE TOO MUCH. QUITE SUDDENLY THE LEVER STARTED TO COME RIGHT BACK TO THE HANDLEBAR. IT RECOVERED REASONABLY FAST BUT A FIREBLADE-TYPE SUPERBIKE WOULDN'T HAVE SUFFERED IN THE FIRST PLACE. AS AN OWNER I'D ALSO BE VERY ANNOYED AT THE AMOUNT OF CORROSION BUILDING UP ON THE BRAKE DISC CARRIERS ? THE TEST BIKES WERE ONLY WEEKS OLD SO IT DOESN'T BODE WELL FOR DURABILITY.
I'M STILL NOT QUITE SURE WHAT ANY OF THE BIKES IN THIS CLASS ARE FOR. SPORTS BIKES COMBINE SIMILAR SPEED WITH MUCH MORE AGILE HANDLING. WHILE TOURING AND SPORTS TOURING BIKES OFFER BETTER COMFORT AND NEARLY AS MUCH SPEED (INCLUDING THE NEW K1300 GT. WHICH WE'LL BE REPORTING ON SHORTLY). BUT SOME RIDERS LOVE THESE MUSCLE-BOUND SUPER TOURERS. AND. FOR THE FIRST TIME. IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE MYSELF I'D GO FOR THE BMW FIRST.
