There are seemingly endless definitions and levels to the term “original" - following is the short list of the items on this R90S that did not roll out of the factory on this motorcycle in August 1975.
* Talbot Berlin Mirrors: Dealer installed at the time of purchase
* Cylinder Crash Bars
* Dual Fiamm horns
* Front Exhaust Guards
* Clock was converted to quartz in 2020
* Center stand kick down tang
* Tires and Tubes
* Spark plugs and points
* Battery
* Rubber Timing Plug (Have original)
The mirrors, crash bars, exhaust guards, and horns are period correct. The Krauser mirrors are a rare option; they offer excellent hand protection as they help deflect the wind; they also offer excellent vibration free rear vision.
The rest of this motorcycle is “original,” factory build.
This R90S comes with all keys, shop rag, tire pump, tool box, owner's manual, service center booklet, and a 1976 sales brochure.
I bought this motorcycle from a gentleman that specializes in restorations of BMW R90S motorcycles – to The Quail Concours d'Elegance winning level – several times. Following are his opinions of this R90S:
“This is the highest investment quality R90S I have ever seen or owned.”
“The best part of the bike is the paint. It is extremely nice original with only a few "flea bite imperfections.”
“It is all original with full ownership history. It is what I would call the most desirable pedigree R90S. It has the original tool kit, shop rag, tire pump and owner's manual that came with the bike.
The owner's manual has the name of the original owner and selling dealership. It is low mileage too, with just a bit over 28k miles.
The patina clearly supports the mileage as does the final drive splines which show virtually no wear. The gauge needles are still nice and non-faded red. The clock was dead, so I converted it to quartz. I performed a full maintenance on the bike and it run, stops and shifts like it should.”
The gentleman I bought the bike from is highly respected in the realm of BMW R90S concourse level restorations and shows; his having decided that this R90S is not a candidate for restoration, but rather an investment grade motorcycle, simply means that no apologies or excuses are needed for this motorcycle.
The history of the R90S is long, legendary, and arguably the savior of BMW motorcycles. If you are unfamiliar with the illustrious history of the R90S, one that has made it both legendry and collectable, please Google the history for in-depth details. The crowning jewel in the R90S legacy is having won the world's first Superbike Championship title in 1976, piloted by, Mr. Reg Pridmore.
Because of Mr. Pridmore's historically significant contribution to the status of the R90S, I asked Mr. Pridmore to sign the right side cover for me, to which he graciously agreed.
I use ethanol free gasoline to avoid breakdown of older rubber seals, increase in vapor pressure, and to stop water attraction from ethanal, thus reducing the risk of rust buildup inside the gas tank and engine, as well as gumming of fuel.
The motorcycle has Cheng Shin Hi-Max tires. Date codes are as follows: Rear/2204 - Front/0705. Tires show no cracking or rot and have plenty of tread. Depending on how you would use this R90S, please be aware of the date codes.
I have other collectables for the Daytona Orange BMW R90S that I will offer to the buyer before selling them separately; they include: an incredibly detailed 1:10 scale Shuco Daytona Orange model in its original box, NOS R90S Sport Owners Club hat, a Daytona Orange hat pin, NOS R90S Daytona Orange patch, as well as a collection of NOS vintage BMW patches, two issues of the January 1976 Cycle magazine with the Daytona Orange R90S on the cover and road test, and two full color laminated magazine ads of the Daytona Orange R90S.
