Description

Indian. UP FOR SALE IS A VERY RARE ITEM. This is a stock 1928 101 Scout 45 cubic inch Real Deal 101... The 101 was touted as probably the finest design in the Indian lineup. The 101 Began in Early 1928 and continued production through 1931... The 45 cubic inch engine and the low center of gravity design by lowering the seat height gave it amazing handling capabilities. These bikes are the preffered motorcycle of all Wall OF Death Riders and many class C racers. This is one of the first 101 units to hit the showrooms in 1928... Here is the history of this machine... This 101 was purchased by a dear friend of mine who recently passed away. I am selling it for the estate... I am a senior Judge with the AMCA and have been riding and restoring bikes since the 1970's... I have ridden this machine a few times and it runs and rides as a 101 should, no odd problems, everything works correctly... My buddy purchased this in the late 1990's and it was added to his collection... He rode it as received for a bunch of years and around 2010 the relay on the DU-7 Generator took a dive... He contacted Kent Thompson in New Hampshire and was able to procure a new armature and an electronic relay from Kent... After removing the end cover from the unit he found that it had a DU-5 Cover(wrong for DU-7), and the electronic relay would not fit... He contacted me and asked me to locate a correct DU-7 cover... I told him I was going into production on the Indian covers and I used his generator which he had removed from the bike to fit my new Manufactured piece(If you look at my other items you will see the ones I make), I also told him that the belt cover on his was not correct for a 1928 and he rebuilt he Du-7 and later located the correct cover(the one in Primer)... During that time period he made a block off plate for the drive hole and continued to run the bike... The generator is only used to charge the battery and the bike will start and run on the Splitdorf... If you charge up the battery the bike will run on the battery for horn and lights until it runs dry... He never got to re-install the generator, But it is all there(see the last few pics) and This all comes with the unit... The only piece I see missing is the drive belt that goes from Pulley to Pulley, Both pulleys are present and all other related parts are there... The belt should be available from Jerry Greer. Also the battery box is a reproduction that the previous owner installed(I believe it is from Randy Walker Machine)... All other parts are oem as far as we can tell The bike was restored by the previous owner(,not a million dollar restoration but it was done in the mid 1980's and the bike has amazing patina and looks like an old original paint machine)... It was last fired and ridden in October 2020 by my buddy;s son David... All fuel was drained and it was put away correctly, The correct Schebler DLX 69 was drained and the gas tank was fogged... My collector friend has a lot of bikes and they have always been stored and started up annually... This bike was looked at by a bunch of Indian experts over the years and its got all the right stuff... 1928 Clincher rims, correct non vented full pan Messinger seat(been recovered at one time).correct vin#, cylinders, headlight, dash, front brake, controls, handlebars etc... All sheetmetal is Original 1928,... Correct dash and amp gauge (westinghouse Indian). Correct doughboy headlight with diffuser lens, All the hard to find 1928 stuff. This is a DGP series 1928 not the CGP Early version and This has the later 101 scout motor and frame, not the early simply Scout model... It runs out strong and will make a nice addition to your collection I have only seen a handful of 101's come on the market in the last bunch of years so don't let this one pass you by... I can arrange for you to see the bike in person if necessary, My friends wife is not going to deal with questions or trade talk or scam artists. All questions and answers will go through me. Clear New York Transferable registration in hand and winner will get a notarized bill of sale if requested... I will assist in the pick up and shipping, all costs related to shipping are the buyers responsibility... The bike is located on Long Island in New York and I am available to discuss anything with any potential buyers...

It has been brought to my attention that the engine in this bike has got some changes made to it over the years... The engine cases are definitely original 45 cubic inch 101 1928 45 cubic inch (DGP vin#), and correct cam cover oil pump, magneto, etc,. with the correct vin# and all lower end related items... I have been schooled by 4 Indian Experts that the top end (Cylinders and Heads) are from a 1928 600cc Scout. The guys I checked with told me that this was a common practice back in the early days when a cylinder failed, The difference is the 750cc heads have 7 head bolts and the 600cc heads have 6... The cylinders bolt right onto the 750 bottom and are then bored up to spec... If you look at the casting numbers in the pics you will note 25 f 27 making them late 1927-1930 cylinders... This motor is a running unit and If it was ever changed then it has been that way for over 50 years... The Indian guys I checked with are considered the best in the business and they all assure me this does not detract from the fact that this is a rare original 1928 model with correct vin and all other components... This bike is being sold as is where is.
