In the late 1920s it was considered that you needed an extra 50cc to haul a sidecar so Triumph added 10mm to the stroke of a Model N to get a 550cc for the 1929 model year. The Model NSD was added to the range in April 1928. About 4,450 of these were produced.
The 5.49hp engine featured adjustable tappets, a decompressor on the right hand side of the crank case, a cable operated exhaust valve lifter, an aluminium piston, full floating gudgeon pin, and a roller-bearing big end. Although the model was fitted with a mechanical oil pump (and a foot pump to back it up for those who didn't trust it) it still ran a total-loss lubrication system. The silencer was a single pipe of 1 5/8 inch diameter, 38 inches long leading into a large expansion chamber with an oval shaped outlet.
The ignition was high-tension magneto. The front transmission chain was 0.5 inch pitch x 0.305 inch wide (covered). The rear was 5/8 inch pitch x 0.253 inch wide (chain guard). There was a helical cam type shock absorber on the engine driving shaft. The clutch was a ball-thrust operation type with dry multi-friction discs and six springs. The gearbox was hand operated and had a combined oil filler and level. The main and lay shafts were supported on ball and roller bearings. The ratios were 5.06:1, 8.2:1, 14,12:1 for solo use and 5.73:1, 9.28:1, 15.99:1 for sidecar use.
The footrests were adjustable. The handlebar was also adjustable and a raised version was available on request. Handlebar controls were front brake lever, clutch and exhaust lifter levers, and independently adjustable ignition, air, and throttle levers. A twist grip was available as an extra.
It came complete with a pannier bag, tool roll with complete kit, tyre inflator, and oil pressure gun. The frame was coslettised and enamelled in black. The rims, hubs, and spokes were enamelled black with gold lines on the rims.
Prices in 1930 were £46/17/6 without lamps and horn, £48/17/6 with Lucas Acetylene lamps and horn, £52/12/6 with Lucas Magdyno Electric lamps and bulb horn. Chromium plating was £2/2/- extra. You could buy the machine on a 'Pay-as-you-ride' plan with the basic model requiring an £11/19/6 deposit and twelve monthly payments of £3/15/-. This plan included a fully comprehensive insurance policy with personal accident benefit to both rider and sidecar passenger. The motorcycle itself came with a 6 months warranty. For the 1930 model year the tyres were changed to 26 inch x 3.00 inch in size. This NSD was replaced for 1931 by a completely different NSD with a sloping engine.
