Description
1954 BSA A7SS “Shooting Star” matching numbers original reg, excellent smooth runner.
Here is a superbly turned out BSA A7SS Shooting Star 500cc in excellent running order complete with V5C and old style buff log book.
All numbers correspond and are original to the bike.
The bike starts super-easily, first kick every-time hot or cold. It doesn't smoke, it sounds great and runs clean, no smoke.
The bike rides beautifully too. It has a good turn of speed for a 500, not really any different to a 650 BSA, certainly up to 60plus it's similar.
The most impressive thing about the Shooting Star though is the smoothness of the engine. It is so sweet and smooth compared to most British parallel twins. Gears and clutch are all A1. The gearbox is very slick indeed. Handling is superb and brakes are good.
Speedo is working well and the electrics are all good. The dynamo is charging well on a 12volt conversion and is properly regulated by a modern solid state AO regulator inside the toolbox.
Lights are good and even the horn & brake light work!
The battery is a modern sealed Motobatt type.
The bike comes with V5C doc and an old buff log book from 1963.
I have checked the engine and frame numbers out in BSA factory records and they are the matching pair the bike left Small Heath with all those years ago. Frame number CA7.7576, engine CA7SS.661. Date of original registration 1st November 1954 (so a 1955 year model).
Registration is still the (transferable) original NTR 460. The bike is now registered for Historic Vehicle taxation class therefore it is MOT exempt and the road tax is free of charge.
Cosmetically the bike is really really clean and well presented. Quality (dark green) enamel on frame and a good standard of finish on the lighter green fuel tank, toolbox and guards etc. There are one or two minor marks and scratches here and there, probably from storage and transport etc. The worst being a deep scratch need the headlamp switch. The tank is good inside and has not been linered. Wheels are both in beautiful perfect condition. Rims are period style flanged alloys (Borranis). Spokes and nipples are stainless. Tyres are both as new Avons, a ribbed Speedmaster front and MKIII rear. There is no fin damage on the cylinder barrel and only a couple of minor chips to 1 top fin on the left side in between the cylinders at the front. (hardly noticeable).
Exhaust system is stainless and in excellent.
