Description

I've had this beautiful Mk1 Ducati 900 Superlight for over 26 years and come close to selling it a number of times in the past when money was tight - but could never bring myself to do it. Many other day to day bikes have come and gone over that time but this one has always been too special to let go. This is bike no. 517 of 952 worldwide.
It has been off the road for a number of years but always maintained in excellent condition with the expectation it would eventually get used again. I've just fitted a new battery, done an oil and filter change and put on new belts with the plan to finally start using it again but really it does make more sense to now finally let it go... for the right price.
Being a series one / Mk1 Superlight the bike should have the expensive Marvic 2 piece wheels and the fully floating cast front discs as standard - most now no longer have these but this one does. In addition it also has an appropriate J 900L number plate as an added bonus. Condition wise, please take a good look through all the pictures as they give an accurate idea of how nice the bike is. There are a few minor marks as to be expected for a 32 year old bike but overall it is in outstandingly good order.
Following the minor recommissioning mentioned above, the bike runs great. All electrics work fine and the engine sounds awesome through the (rather loud) exhaust. The tires are virtually unworn, as are the chain and sprockets.
Paperwork wise, there's the owner's handbook, V5, service booklet (with 6 stamps), a Haynes manual, 3 keys and a very healthy stack of receipts for work done over the years. The majority of receipts are for service items and servicing but there are also some more substantial records for high compression pistons and a twin oil radiator system from when the bike was only a couple of years old. There is also a newly produced vehicle report shown in the last picture confirming the clear history and ownership details. There's a couple of items that have been changed for carbon fibre (the cam belt covers and exhaust hangers) that I have the original items to pass on with the bike.
The bike does not have a present MOT. If it sells and the new owner wants it MOTd I will happily take care of that. Alternatively, if they are content to take it without an MOT a suitable reduction in the purchase price can be agreed.
I am located in Dumfries, South West Scotland. Viewing of the bike is very welcome but I appreciate that it may be a long way to just come for a look. However, if a purchaser buys without viewing and are not entirely happy once they've seen it then that's fine and we can cancel the sale and return any deposit... can't say fairer than that. I can possibly deliver the bike in a hired van for the cost of doing so as long as a deposit and those costs are paid upfront.
Price wise this is hard for me to estimate - partly because I've had it so long but also because I can't find another Mk1 Superlight still with the correct wheels / brakes / fairings for sale. The only similar bike I can find on a google search is in South Africa.
Bank Transfer on collection is preferred, although cash is possible. I have a card machine at work so could use that also. A cheap PX (car or bike) may be of interest if it will help the deal. Please be ready to pay a 5% deposit at the time of sale.
A genuinely reluctant sale. Any questions fire away.
Below is a short Wiki brief on the Superlight if you are interested.

Ducati Superlight
In 1992 Ducati unveiled the limited edition 900 Superlight following the success on the 1991 Supersport. The chassis and engine were from the 1992 Supersport but there were a few details that set the Superlight apart. These included a vented clutch cover, fully floating cast-iron front disc brakes, and larger diameter exhaust silencers (from the 888 SP4). Each model of the Superlight came with sought after performance improvements over the standard model Supersport (SS) such as carbon fibre front mudguard and rear hugger, solo seat unit, up-swept exhausts, upgraded cast iron brake discs and a numbered plaque on the top triple clamp, making them extremely desirable and collectable among enthusiasts and collectors alike. Earlier models featured lightweight 17-inch Marvic/Akront composite wheels. Following on the from the success of the 1992 version, the Superlight specification was downgraded for 1993 which increased the weight of the bike (known as the Mk II). The wheels were regular Brembo and the front discs were now stainless steel. The vented clutch cover disappeared. The 1993 Superlights still came with the numbered plaque on the triple clamp. For 1994 the Superlight (Mk III) was upgraded with a return of the cast-iron disc brakes, upgraded front forks and a stronger aluminium swingarm along with other general differences that were shared with the standard 900SS. Only minor detail changes were made on the Superlight (Mk IV) for 1995 and the Superlight (Mk V) for 1996. With the release of the new Supersport imminent, a Final Edition was offered in 1998. It was silver in colour with black wheels with much of the specifications the same as the earlier Superlight. All of the Final Editions came with a numbered plaque. Production figures for the superlight:

  • Mk I 952
  • Mk II 755
  • Mk III 756
  • Mk IV 550
  • Mk V 309
  • Final Edition 800

  • BIKE IS NOW BOOKED FOR MOT - IT WILL BE SOLD WITH A FRESH CERTIFICATE.
