1960 NORTON DOMINATOR 88 DE LUXE, 500CC, excellent runner

1960 Norton Dominator 88 deluxe 500cc.
Here is a striking and very well presented example of the Norton Dominator de-luxe. Resplendent in two tone red and cream (or Dove grey as Norton called it).
This bike is so evocative of the early 1960's. Really brings to mind the Austin Metropolitan or even Vauxhall Cresta of that period. Whilst Triumph had their enormous “bathtubs” the deluxe Norton's panels were easily detachable for routine maintenance purposes. The rear number plate also detaches for easy withdrawal of rear wheel.
This example has been restored some years ago to a very high standard and remains in excellent all round cosmetic and mechanical condition. It starts easily and sounds superb. Quiet mechanically and no smoke. It rides really well and is surprisingly lively. Plenty enough old school punch for typical classic motorcycling needs.
The bike has been upgraded to Boyer electronic ignition and also Boyer Power Box 12V conversion which simplifies the wiring somewhat and replaces the old rectifier. It charges very well and the lights are excellent.
The bike is extremely smooth and comfortable to ride. It is often the case that the 500cc versions of most classic British twins were the sweetest and most reliable. Gearbox and clutch are excellent. Brakes are really excellent especially the front which has been up-graded to twin leading shoe. Smith's chronometric speedometer is working well.
This is a very rideable, very easy to start bike and is very easy to get onto the centre stand. Also an excellent very strong sidestand is fitted, possibly a Norvil item as it looks stronger that the original.
The bike comes with up to date V5C doc.
Frame and engine numbers (R122 88221 & 88221 R122) match the V5C doc. The bike is registered as a Historic Vehicle therefore the road tax is free of charge and the bike is MOT exempt. Registration number 802 XWH cannot be transferred to another vehicle. Date of registration of the bike is 26th July 1960.
Taking a closer look at the cosmetics, this bike is really good. The frame has excellent enamel, the tin-ware has all been done to a very high standard and remains really excellent albeit with the odd tiny chip / mark or sign of use here and there. The tank has a lovely finish and is very good inside, not linered or petsealed. Wheel rims and spokes are all excellent stainless. Front tyre is an Avon Road Runner, modern type, pretty well unused looking. Rear tyre is an Avon Super Venom, hardly used looking. Exhaust system is all really good. Seat is as new. There is no fin damage on the engine. Both side and centre stands are fitted and in excellent order. All in all this is a real eye-catching typical early 60's style machine, up and running well with V5C and ready to enjoy.
