Description
1973 Norton 850 Commando. Roadster.
History of Norton:
Not much to say here. Hopefully, you already know what you are looking at. The bike is indeed special.
This Bike:
Matching engine, frame and transmission numbers.
I purchased the bike from friend and notable Norton marque expert Brian Slark in 2021. He has been involved with British motorcycles since 1957, joining Norton in 1969 to managing the service and competition departments of Norton and AJS on the West Coast. He later joined the Barber Museum as technical director in 1986, and was also inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2012.
Brian completed this Commando build in 2021. I purchased his bike that year - to scratch my itch to own a Commando for the first time. It definitely has fulfilled that need.
This Commando is best described as a resto-mod. Brian's build was not a catalog stock rebuild, but incorporates many upgraded parts and accessories to enhance the reliability and rideability.
The engine was upgraded to Norton factory Combat specifications with a Combat camshaft running on needle bearings with the crank balanced. Spark is provided by a modern Boyer ignition with a Podtronics solid state regulator. A single Mikuni 34mm carb kit was installed with a K&N air cleaner.
New Superblend OEM bearings were used and crank balanced and end play set to factory spec. Oil pump was reconditioned, and new pistons installed. Actual displacement is 861cc. There is a Barnett clutch kit with a 4mm plate for a lighter pull.
The wiring system was simplified and converted to a negative ground. There is a micro-switch in lieu of the keyed ignition, and the sometimes problematic Lucas switches have been eliminated. The ignition switch is located on the battery box where a keyed ignition could be substituted if the new owner deemed it necessary.
There are some nicely machined billet parts like the cylinder head steady. The build includes many new stainless steel fasteners, rebuilt wheels with Buchanan stainless spokes and nipples, new fork seals and bushings, and newly rebuilt isolatic mounts properly shimmed. The rear shocks are period-correct Koni. The wheels also include stainless steel axles from Colorado Norton Works. CNW also provided cylinder base and cylinder head fastener kits that allow the use of A/F wrenches.
Other parts include:
- new paint
- new Roadster saddle
- new Dunlop TT tires
- speedo and tach restored
- new fuel taps
- new front brake pads and re-faced rotor
- stainless steel caliper pistons plus seals
- front brake hose
- new stainless steel front fender ('75 style)
- new stainless steel rear fender
- new sidestand & spring
- new center stand - latest type
- new RGM kickstart lever w/bottom hinge
The bike is being sold on an Alabama vintage bike registration with Alabama permanent vintage plates. Alabama does not title motorcycles older than 10 years. Your state DMV will accept the official Alabama registration and bill of sale to initiate a change of ownership.
The bike has 9 miles since new. This mileage will go up slightly as I will likely take one more short ride.
I have shipping contacts that I am happy to share. Currently, I can provide insured, enclosed shipping at your expense anywhere in the lower 48 States for $650.
