1965 Matchless G80CS fantastic runner with V5C

1965 Matchless G80CS, 500cc genuine competition scrambler with V5C.
Here is a very good up and running example of one of the best all round British bikes – The Matchless G80CS. These model were designed as scramblers back in the day but were also fitted with lights and sold as “street-scramblers” in the U.S. I assume this is such a machine, The AJS & Matchless Owners Club have dated it as 1965.

The bike is a good and willing starter. Obviously it's not an easy bike to kick up, body weight is required to swing it over properly! It runs and sounds awesome. Mechanically quiet but loud on the through pipe. These engines were intended to be run on a 48” open pipe and they certainly breathe well like that, the down side is the decibel level from the exhaust which some people will enjoy but others may find it to be somewhere between loud and downright anti-social!
The bike rides really well, good gears, clutch, brakes & handling. Gearing is for road use. Performance is exhilerating. I haven't tested it to the limit but this feels like a 90mph bike.
Charging system is the original 6V aleternator set up and is working well. Lights are good, horn & brake light work.
Speedometer is a Smith's magnetic of a slightly later period but is working well. (should be the grey face type magnetic).
The engine is the sought after Norton oil pump type short-stroke all alloy design which was introduced in 1964. These were extremely strong engines with forged flywheels, through-studs and much bigger big end than the old long-strokes. It runs and sounds like a race engine.
The bike comes with up to date V5C doc, registered in my name. Registration number YRL899C, Frame number C10895, engine number G80CS 4886, gearbox number MA6676S. These are all original factory stampings.
The bike is registered for Historic Vehicle (free) road tax and is MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is very good all round. It is not freshly restored but has clearly had a good paint job to the frame and some point. The enamel on the tank is good and the wheel rims are both excellent Dunlop originals with old, dull plated original type spokes. Tyres front and rear are as new Mitas items. (both 19”)
Tank is good inside, it appears to have a thin coating of what looks like grey primer but must be a proper tank coating as it is not affected by the fuel! Chrome mudguards are the U.S. spec originals. Both are decent but some patina especially on the front one. There is no fin damage on the engine. The seat is good but does have some tiny holes in the cover as if it's been splashed with a chemical at some time.
Exhaust pipe is in good condition with the odd scuff mark. Good side & centre stands fitted. Centre stand is the extended version that gives sufficient clearance for a 21” front wheel & knobbly tyres to be fitted.
All in all this is a very nice example of one of the best bikes of the period. Similar in performance to a Goldie but easier to live with and more fun to ride on all roads. Don't miss this exciting Matchless competition scrambler in road going trim.
