Description
For sale is a 1937 Rudge Ulster 500 race bike. Before the rivet counters jump on me for incorrect parts, I will relate some of the history as I know it.
I purchased the bike a few years ago from Auckland NZ as we had a place in NZ at the time. The bike had been raced there fairly successfully prior to my purchase and the owner told me it was a 1937 model which i do not doubt. Whilst he was racing the bike the bronze head did the usual failure of cracking from plughole to valve seat. Whilst a repair was being carried out, a cast iron head and its matching barrel and piston were fitted. When the bike was set up on a dyno, it was making 2 HP more than it had with bronze head and the owner decided to stick with the iron head. The attempted repair of the bronze was bodged and abandoned. The bronze head is repairable and I was quoted around the £1K mark for a repair and valve / porting upgrade with smaller diameter plug.
The reason for my purchase of the Rudge was to compete in the Burt Munroe Challenge but unfortunately health issues followed by covid prevented our travels to NZ. We decided to sell up in NZ and shipped my bikes back to UK. I was going to hang onto my classic bikes but as I'm well into my 70's my biking enthusiasm is waning.
The bike itself is fully set up for racing and compliance with racing regulations. It runs methanol and has TT cams. Note that the oil tank has isolation valve to prevent wet sumping when standing.
The bike is complete as the photographs show.
Also included with the bike are the following items.
The bronze head complete with matching barrel, piston and valve cover.
Boxes of spares that include valve gear for bronze head and various other parts.
Original crankcase. The crankcase fitted was chosen because it has the strengthening webs around the drive side bearing housing casting.
Original fuel tank with no dinks and no corrosion. A smaller tank is fitted for the racing.
Original oil tank with no corrosion.
Original tank knee rubbers and footpeg rubbers.
Also included are a Rudge spares manual and copies off the engineering drawings for the bike components with all dimensions.
A great bike for Classic bike hill climb events etc.
Buyer to arrange collection after payment received.
