Honda's increasing share of the automotive market throughout the 1960s and 1970s was rapid. taking advantage of the fact that many European manufacturers were sleeping on the laurels. It was their even quicker dominance of the motorcycle industry that reduced most British motorcycle builders to little more than a cottage industry. They produced well designed. exceptionally well engineered motorbikes with a relatively small price tag. and it was not long before they were seen in every form of motorsport. from trials and scrambling to circuit racing. Inevitably. this led to the average man about town wanting to convert his street bike into something a bit more racy. and many a home built ‘café racer' was based on the wealth of Honda frames and components available.
This quirky café racer started life as a Honda CB 250 K4. At the beginning of the project. the current owner had a very clear image in his head of what he wanted. He had always hankered after the famous CR 72 racer. and set about to model his own bike in its image. There has been great attention to detail in the building of this fabulous looking machine. from the handmade aluminium tank. to the modified exhausts with megaphone silencers and snap-stud alcantara seat.
The interest in the café racer. brat bike and street tracker scene is growing daily. and custom bikes are cooler than cool. This Honda is a great looking bike to cruise around London on with events springing from everywhere.
