Description
1928 BMW R52. Purchased from John Landstrom at Blue Moon Cycle in December 1998. This bike has not run for 15 years, but engine turns freely and there is compression in both cylinders. Engine number 51159 and frame number 495327 are correct for the range of numbers for 1928 (see https://bmwmotorcycletech.info/id-yr-codes-pwr.htm ) This was clearly a "mostly cosmetic" restoration, but the machine is complete. Here are the issues that I know of: Carburetor is not original - it's a Polish replacement. The machine has no serial number plate, but the frame number is stamped at the plate location and has hallmarks before and after the number (see photo). The final drive has undergone a questionable repair in two places where it captures the frame tubes (see photos). The fuel petcock appears to be a reproduction with no internal gaskets - it leaked the last time the machine had fuel in it. The front brake offers little or no stopping power. There is no battery with the machine. The magneto kill switch has issues - I had to disconnect it when the machine last ran.
If you are expecting a 100% restored machine that is ready to ride - this one is not for you. If you have a hankering for a prewar BMW, are looking for a beautiful example of the R52, and don't mind some further mechanical restoration to make it roadworthy, you have found it!
Documentation: This bike does not have a title, but has a transferable Georgia registration signed by John Landstrom of Blue Moon cycle on 01/14/1999. The bike was never registered by me. I will provide the signed transferable registration, the original bill of sale from Blue Moon Cycle to me, and a new bill of sale to the new buyer. Also included: photocopy of original English rider's manual and German exploded view parts list.
