Description
1961 BSA B31 Goldie style special 350cc V5C
Here is a superb 60's Café Racer style B31 in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. This bike is typical of the kind of bike young lads in the 60's would have created on a budget to ride to the local café only this one has been restored to a high standard. Starting is easy and the engine sounds superb no rattles and no smoke.
The bike rides and handles really nicely and goes very well indeed for a 350. Excellent gears and clutch, good brakes. Speedo is working but rev counter is fitted only as a “go faster” dummy. Charging system is working well, still 6V but with a modern solid state regulator. Lights are excellent.
The bike comes with V5C doc, registration number is 861 UYR. Date of registration is 01/01/1960 appears to have been re-registered in 2016 as a Historic Vehicle (free road tax) & is MOT exempt. Frame number is FA7.3273, engine number is BB31.17322. It is an A7 / A10 frame which has been professionally “kinked” on the right-side bottom rail to accept the single engine.
Cosmetically the bike is in overall beautiful condition. The enamel on the frame is good but looks to have been wet-sprayed rather than stoved or powder coated. Petrol tank is in excellent condition. Not sure if it's a genuine Lyta Goldstar tank or a copy but it certainly looks the part!
Front wheel rim is excellent with excellent “rustless” type plated spokes. Front tyre is a Mitas (Dunlop Universal style), as new. Rear rim and spokes look to be as new stainless. Rear tyre is as new Dunlop TT100. Black tin ware has very nice enamel. There is no fin damage on the engine. Seat is as new, exhaust system as new. There is no sidestand but the centre stand is an excellent “Easy-on” type in very good condition. Smith's 120mph Chrono is showing 289 miles, presumably this is mileage since rebuild.
All in all this is a great example of a 60's home brewed café racer. Grabbing some of the Goldie style but at a fraction of the cost. An ideal easy to live with classic that is ready to enjoy “as is” or could possibly be used as a basis for a full Goldie replica.
