Description
I acquired this bike last year with every intention of getting it running and on the road.
As usual, life has got in the way (along with 2 small kids) and it's best to pass it on to somebody who has got the time to get this beauty running again.
I have done some work and got the carb working smoothly from the throttle and checked various parts over... all of which were surprisingly sound, albeit very, very dirty externally!
I have established that the bike was last taxed in 1986 so was presumably used up until that date. I have also discovered that the bike has been in its current form since the mid-60's at least. So if it's a 'bitza' then it's certainly not a recent creation!
The bike was first registered in the west midlands, not that far from the factory.
With regard to the engine and frame numbers, i can offer no help or advice. I've spoken to many people, none of whom can explain why what appears to be an obviously genuine BB34 engine would have a 5 digit engine number! Why fake a number when it's so obviously 'wrong' according to all known records? The crankcase appears not to have been messed with in any way and the stampings appear original and correct. A definite mystery!
Below is the advert from when I bought the bike... it all holds true and the description then and now was fair and accurate.
I have also included a large number of good quality photos which accurately reflect the actual condition of the bike. They form a large part of the description about its overall condition.
I know i shall regret selling this for the rest of my life, but i also have a Cheney Victor ISDT bike and a BMW HPN PD replica... so something has to give!
Happy to answer all reasonable questions.

1956 BSA Goldstar ISDT replica project with V5C 500cc Here is the opportunity to awaken a classic British competition motorcycle that has been sleeping for 37 years! Date of registration is 16th Feb 1956, but the V5C states rebuilt- assembled from parts which is of course fairly common for competition bikes that have had changes of frames, engines, wheels, etc. over the years! This bike is something along the lines of a BB34 ISDT replica. It is complete and apparently in good sound but obviously cosmetically challenged “barn-fresh” condition. The engine kicks-over OK and sounds and feels normal, still with some compression after all the time standing. There is plenty of oil inside the crankcases, you can hear it squelch when you kick it over so hopefully the internals will be preserved. The gearbox selects all the gears OK, the forks bounce OK and brakes are working. There is a good spark from the mag dyno. This bike would be easy to get running and it's very tempting to do so but I have decided not to as the new keeper may prefer to strip, check and clean the engine first and I think that would be the most sensible way forward. The bike comes with V5C doc, up to date and in my name.
Registration NFK 142, date of registration 16/02/1956, Frame number is not a BSA factory stamping and is on the frame lug on the left side of the bike near the engine. The number itself, BB34GS***** sounds like an engine number not a frame number but it matches the V5C. Engine number is BB34.GS.26783 it looks to be a genuine BSA stamping but does not correspond to any factory record for BB34. (It's too high a number?). It does match the V5C though. In other words the bike is best described as a replica, but I'm sure it has history! It is not yet registered as a Historic Vehicle and is currently SORN, it will of course be eligible for conversion to Historic Vehicle, therefore road tax will be free and the bike will be MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is as you might expect for a barn find. Paint on frame is old and most probably original. Flanged ally 21” front rim looks OK, old dull spokes, 7” front brake. Rear rim is 19” flanged Dunlop ally, also old dull spokes. Tyres are past further use. No fin damage on the lovely all alloy engine. The petrol tank looks as new inside and is dent free! Good centre stand but no side side, however original sidestand lug is intact and in good order. Proper BSA scrambles footrests fitted, flip top comp type oil tank cap. Recorded mileage of 3420 is obviously meaningless!
The top yolk is drilled. It doesn't appear to have been done crudely as a 'home job', the holes are neat, same sized and evenly spaced. No idea why, it can have saved a few ounces at most!
As I state in the advert, no known Gold Star has a 5 digit engine number. B31's and B33's do and it's not unknown for these cases to be used in conjunction with a genuine Gold Star top end. This MAY be the case with this bike, I simply do not know. There is no obvious 'messing' with the cases, filing, grinding or the addition of material. In every B31 or B33 engine number I have seen, there is insufficient space between the first and second group of characters to insert the GS moniker as on this engine... the spacing is very wide and not 'cramped' at all. If the numbers have been changed, it was done a very long time ago when the value difference would have been relatively minimal. I have described the bike as a replica and raised the possibility of it being a 'bitza' in the main advert and added very clear photos.
All in all this is a super basis for a terrific project. A typical example of a 60's competition endure type machine and potentially a very pretty looking old girl too.
Don't miss this great opportunity to restore a handsome Goldie ISDT rep with V5C and period registration.
