HIGHLIGHTS
THE STORY
This exciting one-off custom 2016 Indian Scout is bristling with cool details. It was conceived for the Build a Legend Contest, and built by Z's Customs of Savage, MN, as a nod to the postwar bob-jobs where riders showed their skills and style by modifying their machines for speed and looks. The amazing custom paint job is by Vivid Dragon of Phoenix, AZ, in a deep cherry red with graphics depicting a ghost scout.
The construction details on this machine are amazing, including special custom-milled swingarm plates (labeled Die-Rite Machine and Tool), Indian head folding passenger pegs, an arrowhead ‘air cleaner' cover and a remarkable flat arrow acting as a link between the forward controls and the shift lever.
The tooled leather seat mentions Elkhart Indian Motorcycle dealer and the rear fender has aluminum ‘holes' with a taillight made of the typical Indian fender mascot. Abbreviated two-into-one high exhaust pipes complement the high handlebars to give a classic bob-job stance.
The modern Indian Scout, built by Polaris in their Spirit Lake, IA facility, has a 1133cc (69 CI) V-twin motor with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, giving 100 HP at 8,100 RPM and 72.2 ft-lbs of torque, connected to a 6-speed gearbox.
The frame is a mix of aluminum castings connected by a steel tube beneath the fuel tank, with the front casting including the radiator housing, which does a good job hiding the radiator. The frame is styled to look like a rigid frame, with twin lay-down shocks at the rear completing a ‘rigid triangle'.
The front forks use 41mm tubes, and this custom uses Performance Machine brake calipers with special discs mounted on 96-spoke chromed wheels. The aluminum chassis castings have been polished, and the mix of chrome and shiny aluminum makes this machine gleam.
The leather saddle lowers the already industry-lowest seat height of 26.5” on a stock Scout, meaning this bike can be thrown around with ease and ridden by a rider of any height, with their feet flat on the ground at stoplights. It's a badass and unique motorcycle, and one heck of a cool 2016 Indian Scout.
