Joe Potts 40MManx Norton

This is my 1961 40M Manx Norton. I purchased it from two partners who purchased it as an investment but unfortunately had “fallen out” and had to sell. They had purchased it from well known racing Norton expert Sandy Topen.

I went to Vintage Motorcycle ClubHQAllen House in Burton to see the original Norton factory record books. From the frame number they confirmed this bike was supplied to Joe Potts in April 1961. It was one of a pair. a 500cc 30MManx and a 350cc 40M Manx. Joe Potts was a noted tuner and entrant. He supplied bikes to famous Scottish riders Bob McIntyre and Alistair King.

In the Mick Walker book “Bob McIntyre the flying Scot” on page 142 there is a picture of two Manx Nortons with the caption :Beveridge Park. Saturday 20 May 1961 – Bob's pair of immaculate “standard” Nortons …I believe my Manx Norton is one of the bikes pictured as the Norton factory records show my Manx was delivered to Joe Potts in April 1961.

The frame number of my Norton is for the 30M (500cc) bike. It now has a 350cc engine.

After considerable difficulty I contacted Sandy Topen. Sandy is in his 80. but still working on racing Nortons and owns Manx and Domiracer racing bikes. He explained to me that he was the “general helper” for Joe Potts in the late 50s and early 60's. He knew Bob McIntyre and Alistair King well. When Bob McIntyre died in 1962 Joe Potts was devastated and never went racing again. After a while he sold off all the bikes. Sandy purchased the 30M Manx as a rolling chassis. minus engine. although he did not actually “take possession” until 1963 when he could afford to pay !Along with the bike came many spares that came from the Norton racing department when it closed down in 1962. The 350cc engine in the bike now is built from these parts. This is why there is no engine number. The parts were genuine Norton new parts from the factory. unused since that time.

Sandy rebuilt this Norton just a few years ago with the intention of it being raced again. The chassis rebuild used all the original parts from 1961. It has special Joe Potts fork yolks and is marked “JP” on the frame and other parts. The 350cc engine uses all original Norton. new. unused parts. To make it more competitive the 6 speed gearbox. span > Newby clutch and belt primary drive were fitted. The oil tank and Smiths ARTC rev counter are also new parts. The TT carburettor and Lucas magneto are original 1960's parts professionally rebuilt. The rear wheel was rebuilt with a 18 inch RM2 rim to accept a modern racing tyre. The cylinder head was converted to coil springs by Somerfield Engineering the well known Manx specialists.

When I purchased the bike it had not been run since its rebuild. After finding its history I decided I wanted to ride it so prepared it for use. The cam box and head were removed for inspection. All parts inside were perfect and either new or “as new”. CastrolRracing oil is used.

I have ridden the bike at Llandow circuit in Wales. Very enjoyable. The 6 speed gearbox and Newby clutch certainly help to make it more tractable. It goes well but did leak some oil from the cam box (as all Manx Nortons do) so is now in “as raced” condition !

Summary :

A genuine 196140MManx Norton (previously a 30M) that has provenance as the property of a famous tuner and was probably ridden by famous racers Bob McIntyre and Alistair King.

Completely original in appearanceit has the original clip on handlebars with welded on lever mounts. the correct chrome open megaphone exhaust. the last specification 2ls front brake. a lovely “short circuit” petrol tank and all other 1961 spec parts. I also have a track “silenced megaphone” which is necessary for most circuits nowadays.

Also a few spares including some of the special tools needed to work on the engine.

I can provide proof of its history from the factory records (via the VMCC)

Open to suitable offers around £25.000. I might also consider a part exchange for a classic bike and at least £20.000 but if this is the case contact me before.

The bike is VERY SECURELY located in my home workshop in Worcestershire. if you are a serious buyer and would like to visit.

Thanks for the people offering advice and the people who have offered part exchanges. To clarify. the reserve is £24000. I will only part exchange for a classic bike + £20000 (need the cash. not interested in cars)
