Description
BMW S1000rr Road race or track bike Ohlins & race wheels
Bought brand new from Williams of Manchester at the end of 2011. After running the bike in I did my first track day on it at Donnington. what a waste of time! the bloody thing was out of control with the front wheel stuck up in the air and the back wheel sliding all over the place. Having said that this was the a fantastic feeling as my last race bike was a SP1 which was approximately 50 Bhp and 15kg the difference so perhaps I was a little throttle happy.
I had decided to upgrade to this after talking to Geoff Crust (Ex moto gp team boss) he was riding one at knock hill and there was no one anywhere near him. He explained that there were problems with the traction control system and that I should buy the standard bike without all of the gadgets as they were little use on the race track!
Although I was unable to ride this thing at the 1st attempt I had loved the power and the 160mph wheelie had put the biggest smile ever on my face. So the bike had decided for me. I was going to have another year of racing even though this had not been my intention or reason for buying the bike. I just wanted a good all rounder to ride to the tracks do the odd track day and ride home again …… Honest!
I started to chat with people on the forums and got a rough idea of what I needed to do to make the thing rideable. I had already got some spare wheels form the SP so I had a couple of pairs machined to fit the BMW. this included a set of OZ 16. 5 super light which I shod with Dunlop N-techs and brembo discs. I fitted a quick shifter and bazzaz power commander with the remote electronic controller for the traction adjustment. I removed the cat and had an Austin racing titanium short system fitted and removed everything for the road. fitting a set of race fairings.
With some amount of nervousness I attended cadwell for one of the 1st trackdays of 2012. I asked Colin of 100% suspension for his help with the settings and advise from Holbeach tyres for set pressures. With the base settings in off I went 1st session…. The bike was totally different and although it was still a handful the electronics gave assurance as did the low tyre pressure of the rear. Each session Colin altered the suspension on my comments and by lunch time I was one of the fastest out there with a couple of other RR riders asking what I'd done to the thing as the drive out of the corners was phenomenal. The day went on and we decided that that was the best that we'd get out of the standard suspension units and the decision was made that upgrades would be needed to ride at the next level. It had been a great day and I'd got a good understanding of the bike and what was needed for the next step.
Then. during the last session of the day the engine went Pete Tong…. Black smoke every where and the worst noise I've ever heard from an engine. The crank had gone!
Bloody thing only had 1100 miles on it and now the engine was in bits. Back to the local dealer who meticulously took the engine apart reporting back to BMW after each bolt removal photographing each stage of the removal. This took all bloody summer and the eventual out come was that they fitted a brand new engine free of charge. Once again I run the engine in properly and ordered ohlins cartridge's for the front and a TTX for the rear. The bike went back to the dealers for its 2nd 1st service and unfortunately has sat in the garage ever since! It may have been the pressure of owning such a fast bike or even just old age but the sad truth is that I'll no longer need the bike due to health and work related issues.
