Description
A wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the first BMW R90S motorcycles in the UK with fantastic provenance!
This bike was part of the first batch of R90S models imported into the UK. It was first registered on January 16, 1974, to BMW Concessionaires London. It was later used for press photography by none other than the 5th Earl of Lichfield (later Lord Lichfield), cousin to the Queen, renowned royal photographer, and one of the most famous photographers of his time. As a keen motorcyclist, he was commissioned for photographic work by BMW Cars and was asked to do the press photography for the new R90S. He fell in love with the bike and became its owner a few weeks later, on February 12, 1974—reputedly as part of his fee from BMW. A framed copy of a period advertisement and two press photos featuring the bike are included in the sale.
The Earl kept the bike for seven years until 1981, when it was registered to a lady in Chelsea, who owned it for the next eight years.
Since then, the bike has gained further press exposure. It was featured on the BBC program "The Bike's The Star" and appeared in "Classic Bike Magazine" in 1998, when it was reunited with the Earl at Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire. (A copy of the magazine and photographs from the photo shoot are included.) It also graced the front page of the January 2013 issue of "Classic Bike" and was featured in an eight-page comprehensive comparison test with the Ducati 750 Sport.
The bike comes with a large history file containing old invoices, a handbook, various press articles, and information on the Earl of Lichfield, who famously took the wedding photographs of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1981, covered the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and captured images of celebrities worldwide.
It retains its early original features, including Hella switches, alloy indicator housings, undrilled discs, and a kickstart (in addition to an electric start). A tool kit and tyre pump are also present. The bike is fitted with Michelin tyres, front and rear.
Additional upgrades include:
- Stainless steel exhausts
- Chrome rear carrier
- Crash bars
- Koni shocks
- Pannier set
- Upgraded side stand (original included)
- Stainless braided brake hoses
The engine was rebuilt by Bob Porecha approximately 10,000 miles ago. The speedometer was replaced at 48,000 miles (the original is retained and included). The new speedometer currently reads 2,012 miles, giving a total indicated mileage of 50,022 miles.
The bike is in excellent condition (though not concours). Engine oil, filter, and brake fluid have been changed within the last 200 miles. The front tyre (Bridgestone) and rear (Michelin) both have deep tread. The clock is fully functional.
Manufactured in November 1973 (Frame & Engine No: 407156* – last digit withheld), from April 1st, it will be eligible for "Historic Vehicle" status, making it tax-exempt. I have contacted the DVLA with evidence of its November 1973 manufacture (chassis list from the Falloon book). They may require further proof, which the buyer can obtain by applying for a dating certificate from BMW Classic Group Archives. (An application form is provided in the file.)
Viewing is highly recommended. The bike is located in Hereford. Please contact me if you wish to arrange a viewing or discuss further.
A motorcycle to be proud of—perfect to ride, showcase, or add to any serious collection.
