Description
A proper Robbie Rhind-Tutt Wasp sidecar trials outfit.
Far more famous than its owners. Has been used at championship level most of its life, including international events and seven years in the German Euro Cup. It is suitable for both novices and experts. It will look after you and keep you safe.
A dating certificate is available from Wasp Motorcycles if you want to be the only one with a road-registered factory Wasp sidecar outfit.
The engine tuner wrote to us stating:
"The engine is one of the very first 1978 SR500 models with the bigger flywheel. Nevertheless, we added nearly 1 kg to the ignition flywheel so that the engine pulls smoothly from very low revs to the top, which is especially helpful in the high gears. The piston is a Wössner forged one with a Teflon-coated skirt and increases displacement to 535cc. Plenty of power. The carburettor is a 30 mm Dellorto. The suspension is fully adjustable Koni. The tyres are IRC—the rear one has barely been used. The alloy oil tank, with a capacity of 3 pints, is placed in the frame triangle under the seat, and an oil cooler helps to keep the engine temperature down effectively. The exhaust pipe is made from stainless steel. The secondary drive is as short as possible (10/54), allowing a top speed of at least 50 mph. Other sprockets from standard XT/TT or YZ models will fit, as well as the brakes. Ever and still a great runner, always well serviced. Ready to race. Total weight: 155 kg."
We raced it on short tracks, but a longer secondary drive would make it perfect for long-distance trials.
We are moving into 500 cc sidecar sprinting and land speed racing for 2014, so our Wasp needs a new owner who will use it. It's prepped and ready to go. First-kick starter. Easy clutch. Always finds neutral. Turns on its own axis. Proper big tank for long-haul events like the VMCC Beamish Trial. It also handles modern, technical trials with ease—wondering why the other bikes look wimpy and their crews wear Lycra.
This is a cheap entry into classic sidecar racing, with two solo riders able to share the costs. We have a box of spares, including a full clutch, gaskets, cables, and filters—whatever we have, it's yours, but there aren't loads of extras. This is a professional bike and does not require a bucket-load of spares. It's built and maintained properly, as it always has been.
Last used to deliver Christmas presents to Addenbrooke's Children's Hospital, keeping up with solo road bikes and traffic. All we did was install a larger engine sprocket.
Other photos are from a damp, foggy New Year's Day 2013, when, for some reason, we were wearing our underpants outside our trousers. We race in tweed jackets, of course.
Not sure about the exact year. Robbie works part-time these days—well, he is 642 years old. He can date it if required for road registration as a Wasp. Otherwise, if you want it road-registered, we might be able to help with something tax-free. Feel free to ask.
If I had my way, it would be going to Balco Motorcycles in Reading for a full strip-down, nickel-plated frame (as it was originally), anodised rims, and stainless spokes. They've quoted £1,500 plus VAT, which would make the bike worth £8,500 of anybody's money. But Graeme, my fantastic passenger, said no—sell it at this bargain price, as we really must focus on our F2 sidecar.
Any inspection welcome. Worldwide shipping available—just ask. We have little patience for fools in Norfolk.
If you're a novice—no worries. A training day on a private trials course in Norfolk costs only £116, including full track hire, tuition from the current team, and guidance from an area sidecar champion.
Luxury bed and breakfast available for £35 per person per night if required. Workshop access provided to check or learn how everything works.
Before this Wasp, we used a famous big Ariel HT5 sidecar outfit. Monster heavy, but we don't like modern bikes. It would plough through trees in its wake, so heavy that the driver couldn't even lift the front end. So we wanted:
- An alloy tank (fibreglass tanks are finished with today's fuel)
- Leading link forks
- A big single four-stroke
- A lighter build
Had to go to Germany to get the deal done—and boy, we won first time out against modern trials sidecar outfits. There was nothing we couldn't do. It looked after us—even parked itself during one trial when we both fell off at the same time.
Please don't think we need the money, so no silly offers—we're not asking for any. If you have something interesting—like a van, camper, classic vehicle, hot tub, or box trailer—talk to us.
Price includes delivery in the UK or Europe. For the USA, add just £500.
