1987 BMW R100RS (mono) Café Racer Boxer 'Airhead'

This is an opportunity to buy a unique and attractive BMW 'airhead' Café Racer.

Bought buy me in 2012 as a barn find and fully rebuilt over 6 months with attention spent on careful matching of engineering and of parts from as far away as America. Italy and Germany.

The original speedometer shows about 41. 5k miles with last MOT in August.

Based on an original 1987 BMW R100RS. the mono-lever frame is stronger than the earlier airheads and therefore better handling. This model also has the later lighter BMW flywheel. so the engine spins up much faster than the older airheads. These later wheels also have none of the 'cracking' issues of the earlier 'snow flake' wheels on twin-shock airheads.

Engine and drive Work

The engine was fully dissembled in 2013 and overhauled by renowned BMW engineers. Scriminger Engine Developments of Sleaford;

Work was done on the cylinder heads to improve compression. twin-spark (dual plugging per head) modification and an uprated clutch was fitted. The gearbox was reconditioned. Scriminger Engine Developments also supplied new Dellorto PHM38B carburettors (same as the classic special edition 1973 BMW R90S) with standard airbox removed and pod filters added.

Custom made headers and link pipes were fabricated by Motad and matched to an road legal Arrow endcan (with removable baffle). Shaft drive and end housing rebuilt.

Frame and handling

The frame was completely stripped down. rebuilt and powdercoated. All the old bodywork was removed and the frame dressed up in Café Racer style with Tarozzi rearsets. Giuliari style café racer seat. aluminium rear and front mudguards and Apex fully adjustable clip-ons with ASV adjustable levers.

Front forks were replaced with 2001 Yamaha R1 upside down forks. triple tree and yoke. New headbearings fitted to match the Yamaha and BMW components and new shims made to mate the fork bottoms to the BMW wheels.

Brake Callipers from a 2001 Yamaha R1 are fitted with brackets modified to fit BMW discs while also retaining the Yamaha R1 master cylinder.

New twin Goodridge braided lines for the front hydraulic brakes. Rear drum brakes were overhauled as well.

Rear shock replaced with Ohlins S46HR1C1 adjustable mono-shock.

Original petrol tank stripped down and chromed by Castle Chrome with new enamel BMW roundels fitted.

Giuliari style café racer seat added.

New bar-end mirrors.

New BMW R1200R headlight with Rizoma LED indicators front and rear and a new LED taillight.

Reconditioned 'Diode' board fitted on steel mounts.

Reconditioned timing unit 'bean can' and new ICU from Motorworks.

New dynacoils. HT leads and sparkplugs with new wiring to fit all the new components.

New. more powerful. gel battery fitted.

As you can see. a lot of work has gone into this! It's a great ride; lots of power for an old bike and stops and goes as you'd expect from the uprated parts.

Handling is easy with the low slung weight of the boxer engine and obviously much lighter than the original bike. Clutch feels good with a light action. Lovely sound especially on acceleration with the combination of the filter pods and the exhaust. You won't meet many other bikers with a BMW that looks like this!

Needs to be seen to appreciate all that's gone into this. but no time wasters or joy riders please - I will not hand over the bike until full payment is made and cleared. Open to sensible offers.

This is a custom bike and needs looking after in a way that modern bikes don't; please be aware of this as the bike is sold as seen! There is however a very large community of airhead riders on the internet whose advice will be invaluable in keeping the bike in top condition. It's actually a pretty simple and enjoyable bike to work on!

Thanks for looking.
