Description
1960 VELOCETTE VENOM 500CC
Here is a very sweet running and very fast example of the highly desirable 500cc Velocette Venom. This machine is not freshly restored but in generally good all round useable condition. It is in perfect condition for everyday use. restoration or possible conversion to Clubman rep or even Thruxton style. My view these days is to enjoy bikes more or less as you find them and this one is ready to enjoy. In fact it's one of the smoothest and quickest venoms I've ever ridden.
The bike is in excellent ready to ride order. It starts very well and the engine sounds really superb. Totally mechanically quiet and no smoke. It ticks over like a baby and pulls like a steam train! A brand new Amal carb has recently been fitted.
The gear box and clutch are all in good order. The dynamo is charging well on a 12volt system with excellent lights.
The Smith's chronometric speedometer is working well too. Brakes are excellent front & rear.
Handling spot on!
The bike comes with V5C document. The reg number 6906 RF is non transferable to another vehicle. Date of registration is 22nd July 1960. frame number is RS15272. engine number VM3354. These numbers match the V5C doc but I am not 100% convinced that the frame number is the original factory stamping anyway. There is an MOT until Feb 2016 and the bike is registered for historic class (free) road tax.
Cosmetically the bike is tidy & presentable but not immaculate or pristine. It is used looking and in the right sort of condition to use without worrying too much about the odd spot of rain!
The paint on the frame is high quality stove enamel but old. It has some minor chips marks & stains here & there but is very sound and practical still. It may even be the original paint.
Front wheel rim has averagely good chrome. not perfect but quite presentable. The spokes are chromes with some very light rust spots. nipples are dull brass.
Rear rim is really good. spokes also very lightly speckled with surface rust over chrome and the nipples again dull brass. Tyres are Avon road runners front and rear. hardly used looking.
Petrol tank has very nice enamel & gold lining. It is good inside & hasn't been lined with anything.
Paintwork on the generally tinware. chain-guard. headlamp. forks. oil tank is all excellent. The toolbox lid however has an “orange-peel” effect paint finish!
Sidestand fitted & in good order. centre stand is serviceable but a bit uneven / worn.
Exhaust has very good chrome. silencer also good but clearly not new looking. All alloy engine has all good fins and appears to be nice and oil tight! Seat is in very good condition.
All in all this is a very tidy and respectable looking example. full MOT in superb running order and ready to go!
Don't miss this classic thoroughbred British 500cc sporting single!
