Description
The Darmah was introduced as a replacement for the 860GT which had not been a great success. The new 900SD (Sports Desmo) came out in 1977 and represented a significant change in direction for Ducati. Previously most of the components for their bikes had been sourced in Itlay or the UK. but the Darmah featured German Bosch electrics. headlight and ignition. and Japanese Nippon Denso intruments and switches. The bike was an immediate success and became a realistic alternative to the Japanese competition. Ian Falloon believes that the Bosch electrics and new left hand gearshift represented significant improvements. He warns about the magnesium Speedline wheels and the Sprague clutch on the starter motor. but otherwise believes these bikes to be virtually an electric start Supersport. and therefore undervalued.
Our Darmah is a genuine low mileage 1979 bike imported to the UK from Italy in 2012. We have the original warranty booklet for the bike. issued by Ducati to the first owner which checks out to the frame and engine numbers. The seal on the engine under the crankcase is also unbroken demonstrating that the engine has never been taken apart.
Cosmetically the bike is in very good to excellent condition. There is one blemish on what appears to be original tank paint. and the rest of the paintwork looks to be in excellent original condition. We were informed by the previous owner that the original problematic Speedline wheels were changed for replacements prior to his ownership. The original wheels also come with the bike. The bike also retains its original Silentium exhausts.
The bike has been checked over and serviced by us to ensure that everything runs as it should. On a test ride it performed very nicely. starting easily. running smoothly with plenty of torque (once we had ensured that both fuel taps were on. one for each cylinder). and excellent Ducati handling.
This is a bike to ride and enjoy. or to cosset in a collection.
