Harley-Davidson is both defined and limited by its cruiser styling and that famous 45-degree. air-cooled engine. This was fine through the Eighties and Nineties when Harley was growing fast. but the dependence on a single market sector nevertheless worried the American factory. and in 2001 the V-Rod was introduced.

This was the most dramatic-looking new motorcycle since Suzuki's Katana 1100 in 1981. and with its Porsche-designed. liquid-cooled engine. Harley very much hoped to attract a whole new raft of buyers who'd never previously given the marque a second glance. except maybe to sneer.

It worked well enough for the V-Rod still to feature in Harley's range eight years on. The motor has since been enlarged. up to 1. 50cc from 1. 30cc. with more torque and power to show for that. For 2009 there are three versions: the Night Rod Special. the stock V-Rod and the all-new V-Rod Muscle. apparently named with gay abandon.

The main difference between the Muscle and the rest is its straight-edged. chiselled styling. in contrast to the sweeping curves and softer look of other V-Rods. designed in particular to emphasise the massive 240-section rear tyre.
