MODEL HISTORY
The Kawasaki KH400-A3 was part of the iconic Kawasaki ‘Triple' range produced from 1968 to 1980, with motorcycles ranging from 250-750cc. The latter, more powerful models were nicknamed ‘widow makers' owing to Kawasaki's penchant for producing large engine bikes but still with skinny tyres, flimsy frames, and inadequate brakes! Renowned as the ultimate all-rounder for performance and handling, the KH400-A3 was a rare and expensive machine, with just 448 UK examples sold (source: Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics).
EXTERIOR
Finished in Candy Dark Green, one of only two colour options available for the KH400-A3 model, this matching numbers UK example has gained award-winning status and has featured in various publications and enthusiast books. The pristine factory original paintwork catches the sunlight in an amazing, almost psychedelic manner, almost impossible to replicate on a repainted example. Beautifully detailed in every respect but not to the detriment of originality, all components are in remarkable order and the chassis and engine numbers are clearly visible for inspection. Likewise, the almost ornate, asymmetrically arranged three-branch exhaust system displays clear part number stampings with only the faintest pitting to a very small section. Lifting the seat reveals further delights, such as the original and complete toolkit in the plastic pouch, and all manufacturer stickers and notices are clearly intact. The seat, grips, and rubbers can all be described as excellent. A truly exceptional example of the Kawasaki's that took the 1970s biking world by storm.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The three-cylinder, two-stroke, air-cooled engine has a 401cc displacement and produces 38bhp with a claimed top speed of 101mph. Features such as the capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) remain exactly as the manufacturer intended. The 5-speed transmission, incorporating primary drive by straight-cut gear and wet multiplate clutch, operates perfectly. It is crucial to emphasise that this collector's example is not just a showpiece but has been maintained and, importantly, used as intended in dry conditions—almost certainly with a guaranteed smile on the rider's face experiencing the ‘Triple Tingle' at the top end of the post-7,000 rpm power band!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This KH400-A3 retains its beautiful original chrome wire wheels to preserve the classic look. In exceptional condition, the wheels are shod in premium quality Dunlop K82 tyres of size 3.25-18 and 3.50-18 (front and rear) with masses of tread remaining and no cracking whatsoever. The braking system incorporates a brake fluid reservoir with viewing level window, and a single 11” front disc and 7” rear drum to bring the bike up safely.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 2nd August 1976, this early KH400-A3 is one of 6,000 produced and just 448 sold in the UK. Having covered just 5,337 miles under the ownership of devoted enthusiasts, this incredible bike has been preserved in amazing condition and exactly as Kawasaki intended. The previous keeper used and enjoyed the bike in dry conditions and kept it as part of a vast and almost overwhelming collection of mainly 1970s Japanese bikes and mopeds.
Absolutely all credentials are ticked with this low mileage, matching numbers UK example. The correct handbook inside the storage compartment is amazingly still present, as is the Kawasaki dealer leather key fob. This actual bike is also featured on the front cover of *The Kawasaki Triples Bible* by Alastair Walker, and period literature is included with the sale. Renowned as being the Triple Series bike that Kawasaki ‘sorted without sanitising,' this KH400-A3 is an absolute must for the avid collector where inspection and trial will not disappoint. A rare unmissable opportunity indeed!
12 months MOT. HPI clear.
