Description
This is my 1970 BSA Ariel 3 trike.
I bought this 23 years ago, (still have the ad!) it was running but I decided to restore it as best I could. Seemed to do a bit every couple of years and then put it back into the garage again. As you can see everything was repainted in the correct colours and then re-assembled. Steel wheels professionally blasted and resprayed, I even managed to find correct 3 NOS Michelin 2x12 tyres which are more or less unobtainable. Because of their age, these too now show some signs of cracking round the sidewalls, but obviously no tread wear. It comes with shiny NOS chrome pedals and cranks, and the engine cover has NOS white plastic fasteners. Rubber saddle is still good. It's not finished yet, still a few little things to sort out, little wiring issue, (can't remember where one of them goes!) Needs both brake cables sorting out, probably replacing, and the chrome on the handlebars needs doing, and probably one or two more things I haven't thought of. The difficult and expensive bits are all done, so a rather simple project to finish off. A few things with it -NOS -Pedals and cranks, Spark plug cap, STD piston and rings, Brake shoes, Choke lever, Carb inlet manifold, White plastic hub inserts, Decompressor valve.
Lots of old bits -2 carbs, Wheels, tyres which don't look too good, 2 engines, 1 I think is new, but badly stored, Rare rear rack plus fixings, Frame with frame number sticker still attached, Nov 1970, Serviceable exhaust, Factory worshop manual, parts list and owners manual, Basket for the engine cover, but not well, couple of bars detached, but still present.
It obviously qualifies as a Historic Vehicle, would require no MOT, and road tax would be zero rated, just take the V5 to the Post Office to change the classification. It was last on the road in 1980! I had it driving round the garden last year, it ran briefly the other day, but probably needs a quick carb clean, I will sort that out in the next few days if my back will allow me to spend an hour on it, but these little Anker Lara engines are great little reliable engines. I will update the listing as the week goes on. After 44 years off the road it would be great to see it doing what it's meant to be doing again, hopefully an Ariel 3 enthusiast will take it's under his wing and finish it off.
Collection only, we are near Wokingham, Berks, RG404RA.
Thanks for your time, sensible questions, viewing, most welcome, just get in touch.
Spent a little time trying to get it running, it seems you have to put fuel in the tank before it will go! I think the rear wheel hub centres should be orange like the front wheel, there is still quite a lot of the paint left over from the respray should you wish to do this. Also found an alloy engine subframe thing which is probably no use to anyone, but will of course come with the bike.
