Description
Beautiful and rare 1951 Sunbeam S8 Twin Cylinder 500cc motorcycle.
I have owned this Sunbeam for thirteen years. These are hard to find here so I imported it from England. The previous owner - a London police officer had it for 28 years. The bike was in running condition when I bought it. I got the engine completely rebuilt here by a Sunbeam expert. I got the alternator unit reconditioned from England. Bike has original gas tank, fenders, wheel hubs, and tool box. The gas tank inside was professionally sealed and coated.
Bike has side stand, center stand, Smith's speedometer. Correct 8 inch headlight with cats eye lens. The ammeter, ignition switch, and headlight switch on these bike are placed on the right side. Not very practical but amusing.
Runs good. Clear title.
Frame number: S8-3682
Engine number: S8-12438
If you know the history, BSA bought the Sunbeam brand in 1943. Then in 1946, model S7 was launched as a Gentlemen's Bike. The S8 model was launched in 1949 as a sporty version. The S8 was lighter with narrower tires and nice looking aluminum silencer. The S7 and S8 are rare British bikes with shaft rear drive. Some say BSA was trying to copy BMW with this design. The parallel twin 500cc engine was designed with overhead cams. The engine was rubber mounted to reduce vibrations. I have owned several S7 and S8 over the years. These are nice bikes to cruise around town. The claimed top speed is 90 miles per hour. But I like these bikes at 45 to 55 miles per hour.
Actual mileage unknown. Sold as-is. No warranty expressed or implied. No guarantees.
Buyer to arrange shipping. Shipping to most states should be about 600. I know one good shipper. I can also meet within reasonable distance if you like. Storage no problem after payment is clear.
I am a member of Antique Motorcycle Club of America. I can provide references from club officers and also from St. Paul Harley Davidson shop. This Sunbeam is in good home with my other collection. I want it gone to a good home. I might sell few other bikes. Please ask what you are looking for. Give me a ring to talk.
Thanks for checking. Feel free to ask questions.
