Description
In 1991, Gilera introduced what was possibly the most radical 125 sports bike of all time – the short lived and dramatically styled Gilera CX125, and in time earned cult status as one of the most futuristic designs to ever grace a small capacity motorcycle.
The CX was heavily based on Gileras SP0 series of 125 sports models, and uses the same engine as the Crono but in a slightly lower state of tune. It features a single side swing-arm rear end and a single-sided front end also. Gilera retained the single sided swingarm and fitted it to their hyper sports GFR 125 model.
a brilliant and reliable liquid-cooled 124cc two-stroke producing just under 30bhp, an electrically controlled and operated exhaust port valve means the engine is quite tracktable below 7000 rpm, above this, the port is opened fully and the bike starts making beautiful two stroke music via a six speed gearbox. Styled by noted Italian designer Luciano Marabese, the bike's aerodynamic bodywork and striking colours make it beautiful on the eye and ear.
The Gilera CX125 was built for one year only in 1991 and it's believed that only around 1,000 were produced.
This bike was registered in the UK in 2002 and the odometer shows that only 5,466 km have been covered. I believe this to be correct, the MOT certificates with the bike go back to 2005, when the odometer showed 4177. A KM to Miles converter has been fitted at some unknown point, so we can say that the max distance covered is 5466 miles, but in reality it is less. The previous owner had a collection of 35 bikes, and has just decided to downsize, the CX has been in his house for the last 18 months. It's in very good condition but not immaculate, it has several marks in the bobywork paint and graphics and the paint on frame has been touched up in few places. I think the wheels have been powder coated and it looks like the rear swingarm, front arm, plus the two gold coloured panels on the bobywork have been resprayed.
Mechanically the bike is in excellent condition as is to be expected on a vehicle that's only covered 5500 miles, it has a new MOT and is fitted with new Michelin tires. The front suspension unit oil seal was leaking when I collected the bike but I have replaced this with a quality Ariete item.
The original tool kit is present, although I don't know if it's complete.
The original two pieces of rubber that cover the body work panel joints above and below the petrol and two stroke oil tanks access panel, have been replaced by a UFO tank protector and a piece of rubber cut to suit. The original pillion seat cowl is not with the bike, however a fibre glass after market cowl that looks an exact colour match is present, but this will not fit properly in it's current state. It could be made to fit properly by sanding the resin on the underside of the cowl. There is a bum stop with the fibre glass cowl, however it's made from black rubber, the original was orange, the same as the seat.
There are two cracked panels that have been repaired, one is on the L/H under fairing. I only noticed this on removing the panels and seeing the repairs from the back. This panel also has a very small piece of plastic missing at it's forward edge where it joins with the R/H side belly panel, it's immediately behind the front wheel so is not noticable. The other repair is to a mounting lug that supports the spark plug access panel on the L/H side bodywork panel. Again, this is only visible from the back of the panel. There are also two very small cracks on the forward R/H side bodypanel. The cracks run from the fastener holes to the edge of the panel. Looking at pictures of another CX that has covered almost double the mileage of this one, the same cracks are present but they haven't gone past the fastener holes, so these shouldn't either.
There is also a crack at the bottom of the clear plastic covering the clocks, it runs from roughly the middle point, below the time display, to about the three quarts point, below the low fuel light. The low fuel level sensor has been removed so this function is not working. The two pillion foot peg mounts have also been removed, the silencer can should hang from the R/H bracket but this has been replaced by a Harris aluminium bracket that fits perfectly (who's gonna take a pillion on a CX anyway?).
I rode the bike to and from the MOT, the engine performs just like it should, the exhaust valve opens and the power rushes in just after 7000 RPM. At less than 5500 miles it should still be on the original piston and crank, with the squish band as set up by the factory.
There are two keys for the On/Off switch and one key for the steering lock, fuel filler access panel and helmet holder. All main light and indicator filaments have been replaced with LED's. More images available on request, viewing possible by arrangement.
A CX that had covered 8000 miles sold at auction in the UK this July for £4830, there are two showing much higher mileage on sale in Italy now but at a much higher price. Low mileage mechanically unmolested specimens like this one don't come very often.
