Description
I have added photo of engine number which is 13551 YD1 which is a 1949 model so could be original? also new number plate.
For sale a very early BSA Bantam D1 dated by Bantam club as November 1949.
Bantam frame numbers start at YD101 in 1949 for the British market. This bike has frame number YD10288 which I believe makes it the 188th off the line? (pre '49 were export only).
The bike was discovered in the early ‘90s in a bit of a sorry state and then completely rebuild (see photo by wall ) but never registered as there was no paperwork found. It had a MoT certificate issued under the original registration number KUU436 in Jan 1992. The bike was sold by David Robinson Motorcycles in Wandsworth in 1992 following the rebuild and the new owner started the process of registration but this was never completed and the bike has sat for over 30 years in his garage never used due to unforeseen circumstances. I purchased the bike a couple of years back with a plan to get it back to full working order.
I have rebuild the front forks (seized from lack of use) replace the complete ignition system, cleaned out the old fuel. It starts and runs well, only driven around my garden but all gears work. Lights all operate. I also raised the seat by a couple of inches to improve comfort but it's just too small for my arthritic hips! Oh to be 17 again! With the changes in the way the DVLA accept vehicles without paper I was unable to prove its original number plate and it is registered with a period number as it was accepted as an original 1949 motorcycle. V5C in my name. The vehicle is SORN. Some of the chrome has suffered its long garage storage particularly the wheel rims (Wheels were replaced in the ‘90s rebuild, but could go back to painted rims as originally made?)
Also sadly the paint has faded in places and a little rust on one corner of the front mudguard (No idea why just there?) Also, the speedo does not work but it is the original 1949 one on the bike. It would need servicing or repair. There are some spare, legshields (no brackets) rear rack, new head lamp unit and light switches (never got round to fitting them). Also a spare speedo which sort of works, maybe it could be used to repair the original one?
My reason for sale is simple I've had a number of classic car restorations on the go for many years and now have to focus on the ones I will be able to use once complete. Therefore I offer this up as a running project. Think it would make a great winter project to just go over the machine and give it a good clean and safety check.
Please note the photo of the bike against the wall was taken in 1992. The original photo of the bike in green.
