Fifty four years ago, Harley-Davidson introduced the 1971 FX Super Glide, which was nicknamed “The Night Train.” Often touted as the first factory custom in the early 1970's. Because funding dollars were tight, Willie G. Davidson and his design team mated the chassis of a larger Big Twin chassis with that of the lighter, more manageable front end of the Sportster, giving it a lean, custom profile. Standard colors were Black or Birch White. The most popular optional color was Sparkling America, which was a base color of birch white with red, white, and blue mylar panels on the tanks and fenders. A total of 4,700 Super Glides were built in the 1971 introduction year. The result was the 1971 introduction of the “Sparling America” motorcycle which featured red, white and blue paint and a unique “boat-tail” rear fender — all trademarks that say circa: “1970s”. This particular 1971 Harley-Davidson Super Glide is a completely original, extremely low mile machine that is in nearly “as new” time capsule condition. The bike is finished in its original color of Birch White with the original red, white, and blue factory graphics, and it is nearly flawless. This machine has 523 riding miles on it, the low mileage occurring as a result of being part of a dealership collection since the 1980's. Aside from the 1971 Super Glide in the Harley-Davidson Museum, this is likely the only other machine with this type of low mileage. The FX comes with a clean Illinois title. None of the engine finishes have been restored, just cleaned and preserved. The same can be said for the frame, which was cleaned and polished to preserve its authenticity as are the rims, and other accessories. Every part of the motorcycle was preserved, including the original tires, which are the original Goodyear tires with which this FX left the Harley-Davidson factory. They are in new, time warp condition, and although they are aged out, they are still soft and pliable enough to ride very short distances under very specific circumstances. If the new owner plans on riding this machine on the street, I would recommend installing new tires. The cosmetic condition of this machine is just as it looks in the photos. Again, every finish on the machine is original, including all of the trim. Absolutely no part of the bike has been painted or re-finished, including the original exhaust system. The paint on the tank, fenders, etc. are original, and have never had any type of paintwork or touchup. The paint on the frame and associated parts is also original, and is in very nice condition. The bike has never been in any type of accident or been dropped at any time. The seat is also in original condition and is very nice. The running condition of the machine is flawless, and it will start immediately. This bike has been part of my collection for some time and is basically a well cared for bike that will run and ride with absolutely no issues, if the new owner decides to ride it.
