Description
BSA 1934 350cc R35-4 de luxe.
The R35-4 was a 350cc model made by BSA in 1934 and 1935 only, in small numbers and only the early first batch were fitted with a hand-shift gearbox. The bike for sale here is one of the first batch with subsequent batches moving to a foot-shift mechanism. This happened so soon after manufacture that the only catalogue photo ever produced by BSA shows the later foot-shift model. I have included this amongst the photos. It's a very attractive bike that had a very short production life before being replaced by the first of the Star range.
The R35-4 is half a model 750cc Y-12 v-twin and shares parts with both that, the 500cc Model J34-11 and other models in the 1935 catalogue. This makes the spares situation easier than you might think if you are prepared to go through the BSA parts list for that year and match part numbers across different models. I can provide an electronic copy of the 1935 parts list for the model range.
When I bought the bike it had been restored by a previous owner but I made some small changes in the interest of rideability.
The bike needs a little work - after fitting a new piston, valves and guides I suffered an injury to my hand before completing the job. Things that still need to be done are checking / setting the ignition timing, fitting a new de-compressor cable then re-fitting parts removed to make work easy (new seat, primary and timing cases, exhaust) and adjusting cables and chains, normal post maintenance work stuff. I'm selling it as it is un-finished because I will need to clear workshop space before my injury has healed.
I have included photos of the bike as it is now in my workshop now - PLEASE CONTACT ME with any questions about what remains to be done, I DO NOT want another uncertain or unable buyer. If you have no previous experience of a 1930s motorcycle this is possibly not a good purchase for you. These are easy jobs if you have two good hands but at the moment I only have 1.5!
The sale includes a set of new replacement brake and clutch levers that I was planning to use that accept conventional nipple ends rather than the original 1930s clamped type fitted - I have included photos. The inlet rocker cover is not fitted though I have one that I found NOS in France that was to have been fitted after I did the timing - I have included a photo of that too.
I am including a new seat plus some old seats and parts as a source of extra springs or parts if you want to modify to suit yourself. Aftermarket Lycett type seats are not perfect, in some cases very weak at the nose mount and springs. The seats tend to be a one size fits all in the adverts but in reality, fit none without modification.
There is no exhaust rocker cover fitted because BSA didn't either. BSA thought that not having one promoted better exhaust valve cooling. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time.
Since I have owned the bike it has been used infrequently, occasionally to commute to work on the other side of town but mostly for charity runs and local runs around Glasgow where the bike and I both live. It has been fun to own and ride but now it's someone else's turn as I concentrate on other bikes.
The bike is currently SORNed. The bar-end mirror shown in photos is no longer fitted, I found it was broken when taking workshop photos and dumped it.
I am not interested in swaps or PX deals.
The buyer will be responsible for collection or shipping.
