Description

Regrettably, the time has come to sell my absolutely mint, unrestored and cherished UK-registered RD350F1 with matching frame and engine numbers due to imminent emigration. I have given the potential new owner every detail I could think of below:-
Owned since 1987 by myself and my brother (both enthusiasts), first registered in February 1986 and having previously had just one owner, this is a very rare opportunity to acquire an immaculate example with original paintwork of the rare 'F' model - manufactured for just one year. Since 1987, it has remained in the family, my brother owning it for a short period of time whilst I worked overseas. It has been part of my collection for many years, runs beautifully, used only occasionally, always garaged and never dropped or ridden in the wet. The inside of the original fuel tank is mint, with no signs of any rust as is usual with bikes of this era.It is as it left the factory in terms of the paintwork and I have added tasteful, period modifications. It really has to be seen to be believed in this condition.
I worked for a Yamaha dealer for many years, so I was able to obtain new genuine parts very cheaply, of which many have been fitted to this bike.
I have listed the modifications to the bike below :-
Starting with the engine, the top end has been tuned to Stage 3 specification by the legendary Stan Stephens in the late 1980's, when he was at his best. The cylinders have been rebored using genuine pistons, rings and small end bearings. The crankshaft has also been reconditioned just a few thousand miles ago using new genuine bearings. Carbs are the standard 31K items, ultrasonically cleaned and rejetted to 310 mains. Jet needles, nozzles and float needles/ seats are new and genuine Yamaha. Filters are Ramairs which work well. Reeds are original Harpowas from the 80's – the best aftermarket reeds available for this bike at the time. Reed blocks have been reworked by Stan Stephens as part of the tuning process with the stops opened to 12mm.
There are no oil leaks anywhere, as the vulnerable seals have been replaced with genuine Yamaha items (gearchange shaft, front sprocket, kickstart shaft, and outer crankshaft seals).
Exhausts are Jim Lomas polished stainless steel expansions with Gibson carbon-fibre silence cans. They are completely unmarked and suit the bike well. Clutch friction and steel plates have recently been replaced with genuine Yamaha items. 3 of the springs are uprated. The left and right-hand engine casings are brand new genuine Yamaha, completely unmarked and mint. The prospective new owner is welcome to remove the bottom section of the fairing to inspect. The power-valves have had new genuine seals fitted a couple of thousand miles ago.
The oil pump is also brand new, having been fitted as part of the new clutch casing, although I am currently running on 38:1 fully synthetic pre-mix. The pump drive gear has been removed from inside the clutch casing to prevent the pump being operated. Please note that the drive gear and circlip will be supplied so that the new owner can use the pump. I have to say that I would now prefer to use the pump, but chose to use pre-mix many years ago in my younger days and haven't gone back to the pump since. It would be an easy couple of hours' work to go back to it. I don't have the oil tank as it was removed many years ago when I switched to pre-mix, but the tank and oil lines are all inexpensive and readily obtainable from Norbo.
The ignition coil is Dynatek from the USA, along with custom-made HT leads and plug caps supplied by Sumax. The ignition system is Zeeltronic. Included is the programmer, which is very straightforward to use and the instruction manual is included. It allows you to select various ignition curves or customise your own for performance. The bike is currently using curve 2 (as shown in the instructions).
Moving on to the chassis, the front forks have recently had new genuine oil seals fitted, along with taper roller steering head bearings. Uprated fork springs were fitted at the same time, which helped with the sponginess of the standard forks. I took the opportunity to have the fork leg lowers powder-coated in the correct satin black with new decals. It has a Sprint steering damper fitted.
I have fitted XJ600 brake calipers all round, as they fit using the standard bolt spacing and provide a decent period upgrade as they look similar to the originals. The calipers look good in silver and have been fitted with new seals. Goodridge stainless hoses all round.
The front mudguard, radiator and guard are brand new and genuine Yamaha.
The swingarm is a classic JMC polished and braced item from the late 1980's – very rare to find one nowadays and it is completely unmarked. The rear shock is a Hagon unit in mint condition. Handlebars, switchgear, indicators and footrest hangers are all brand new, unmarked and from the F2 model, as they look better and more up-to-date.The wheels are also from the F2, as they look very similar but better in my opinion and provide a weight saving over the standard wheels.
The speedo is from an RD500 (150 MPH) as its internal gearing actually makes the reading closer to the true speed than the standard speedo. It reads 11k miles, but I would estimate that the actual mileage of the bike since new is less than this – around 8k miles. When the RD500 speedo was fitted it read 8k miles and I seem to remember that the original speedo read about 5k miles when it was replaced.
I have 2 seats for the bike – the standard one in superb condition and the one fitted, an original Guilliara two-four seat from the 80's in mint condition. I bought the Guilliara soon after purchasing the bike and it still looks like new.
The side stand, headstock, kickstart, rear brake lever and bar end weights have been chrome-plated, are unmarked and look amazing.
Tyres are Bridgestone Battlax BT45's with plenty of tread. They are one oversize front and rear (100/90 18; 120/80 18).
I have receipts from many years ago, including its first service at a Yamaha dealer in 1986 and the one from Stan Stephens for the tuning. It comes with the original Yamaha Owner's Manual and Service Manual (although the front cover is missing).
If I had to think of any issues with the bike, all I can come up with is that the indicators don't self-cancel! I had to replace the original relay recently and this feature hasn't worked since.
Thanks for reading and any questions please ask.
