Claim is "the fastest Hinkley on carbs in World". there is a super-charged one in the States. there would be!
If you have Formula 1 workshop. and can get test parts from Triumph. perhaps you could make a faster one?Could you make it reliable though. and poodle down the shops. plus win its class in the Brighton Sprint whenever it turns up?
Back in 94. when My Bloor blew the 125 unofficial bhp agreement with the 1200 Daytona at 147bhp. the big Japanese firms took off. Kawasaki led the way with ZZR1100. ironic as the GPZ900 was the basic design mark for the Hinkleys. Dave Young at Bol D'or Motorcycles decided that was a poor show. He got a Daytona. a donor 1000 engine with only 4000 on the clock from Trervor at Sprint Manufacturing (was in a bang. hence the repair to rear of block. Pro repair been there since 1995) and gave it to Ricardos Engineering of Shoreham. look them up. not your normal back-street tweakers. major Formula 1 people. Add some un-official Triumph prototype pistons and cams. and you have effectively a competition machine. The carbs altered. The valves altered and re-angled (can you do that?)
Resulting bike was tested Jan 1996 by Chris Moss at Bruningthorpe Proving Ground. not far from Hinkley as it happens. against. of course. ZZR1100. then the main machine available. Have the magazine. with the test. plus laminated versions for the garage wall.
Needless to say it sent it into the past tense. 177mph timed. and 142bhp at back wheel. 168 at the crank !
Mind you the amazing 12 pots of Billet brakes up the front was useful. to out-brake the Kwack.
It was then a regular at the Brighton seafront sprints. winning its class at each outing. At the end of 2 years Ricardos took it apart for inspection and re-build. as is standard procedure.
Dave then put it into Sprint Executive trim. even with a carrier! That is the amazing thing. It runs clean as a whistle. and is totally rideable/tractable. A refection of the meticulous work at Ricardos.
Eventually it ended up sat in their showroom with a fairly strong ticket on. I kept watching it for about 2 years. and finally got it from Dave at an opportune moment. Having owned over 40 Hinkleys. it was the ultimate one to own. Even more so as the racing pistons in the Billets had just been re-coated at about £400 with a road/long term coating. On getting it shipped home. I found it needed some re-commissioning to get it sweet again. shims. carb rubbers. new PVL coils. ignition sensor. oil pressure switch. carb strip. ultrasonic clean. re-set. new battery. fully synth oil of course. filters. fork oil etc. what you would expect. The carbs were quite easy as are not the usual ones with the floppy float bowls have always come across.
I have lots of bikes and projects. and swopped it with an equally excellent/interesting Bob Moss Kawasuki1127.
Guy in Duns who then owned it (still in Sprint trim) then went on the Continent and all over. Ran like watch but got a new clutch. probably after the Brighton Sprints.
Like me. he gets bored and wants other things. so I bought it back. as fancied the idea of putting it back to MCN order/Daytona.
This I have done. Have left off all the now largely obsolete decals/advertising. and could not get the original rear side panel stickers silver over blue at the time. just the more logical blue on silver. Apart from that (which could be obtained if major stickler. and willing to get pattern ones done) is as per Chris Moss. Have also fitted the standard rear wheel with 160 tyre as prefer the flickability and feel compared to the 180 three spokers. that also tend to leak air a bit. Again if want exactly as MCN can get a three spoke from Ivan at National Triumph in Wolverhampton. and get it matching powder coated as per these if wish. can do from here if makes decent money. should make 3+ in fairness.
At moment re-modeling couple of harley FXRS. and really fancy doing an ex Speed Triple Challenge bike. if any body has one? (Could have bought Haslam's way back then. but did not have the money! Wonder who has that one now. if not binned with most of the others?)
Any inspection welcome. Rides like a true special/competition bike. Makes a 1200 Daytona feel huge and slow in comparison. and a Super III more like a Trident. but starts on the button. runs smooth and clean. and is in fact an easy ride. Note got the seat tricked out with superior covering and matching piping. These did not have the rear hump fitted. Know they look smart. but does not suit the slightly older style of the early bikes. plus this is really comfy. for pillions as well. Went out yesterday and the fairing is excellent. even if 6ft 2. actually works. not many do for me.
Can get pro delivered for £100. but make that £150 to way up Highlands. and £175 to N Ireland. If in Europe best contact Charles Mortimer for an accurate quote. but realistically looking more like £400 I would imagine door to door?
Do 100 on Paypal to hold any deal. Balance in cash or bank transfer. spoil yourself for Xmas. Money useless in the bank. and cannot ride it either!
Will do some more pics. Do have a short Youtube can look at as well though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZlsSNU5aEQ
