Norton Commando 750 fully restored using NOS parts

This Norton Commando 750 Interstate is a nut and bolt restoration done by a Norton Specialist in Athens. Greece with more than 40 years of experience. Most of the parts used to restore this motorcycle came from a collection of Ex-Athens Norton main dealer NOS (New Old Stock) parts.

Some history:

This Machine. Commando MkII 144165 was built on 5th March 1971 and then supplied new to the Berliner Motor Corporation Longbeach U. S. A. as a Roadster MkII. It was then supplied new to U. S. armed forces for use on the Athens air base.

With the end of the cold-war it was agreed to end the USAF presence at the airport and the wind down of the base started in the late eighties. the United States closed its facilities in 1993. The bike was decommissioned in 1985. The bike was then transferred to the Greek government and ended up with the Greek Coast guard.

When purchased by Norton specialist in Athens. it was found to have an 850 frame (story unknown) but needless to say it has genuine Greek state authorisation numbers stamped on the frame and these numbers are recorded in all official documentation.

The later 850 frame is not a bad thing. it offers a more stable steering angle and trail plus rear subframe reinforcements. The price reflects the none matching frame.

Now it has undergone a nut and bolt restoration.

The engine is like a brand new engine. only run for a few miles for all necessary first nut tightening.

2014 Complete ground up restoration including the following:

Engine:

- Crankshaft re-bored to 0. 10

- New Superblend crankshaft bearings

- Pistons at 0. 20

Gearbox:

- New bearings with the lower one of a newer type which is re enforced.

- Uses Roller-bearing. with a thrust shoulder on one side of the race. Number NU203E C3

- Both chains new (single drive and triple primary)

- New clutch pressure diaphragm spring and plates etc

Cylinder head: (Some slightly damaged fins)

- New Valves

- New Valve guides

- Valve seats recut

Electrics:

- New wiring harness

- New Boyer electronic ignition

- New single phase Alternator 120W

- New Lucas handlebar bar switches

- New main ignition switch

- New Lucas rear light assembly

- New Lucas headlight

- New Warning light switch

- New capacitor

- New solid state Rectifier/regulator

Fork:

- New fork legs. including new bushes. seals and washers

Rear Suspension:

- Girling New Old Stock with some minor scuffs as they have been sitting for quite some time.

Isolastic engine mounting system Top Front and Rear:

- All renewed

Brakes: Front disc and rear drum. Rebuilt all around with new parts

Swinging arm: rebuilt with new bushings

Wheels:

- Rims with Original chrome

- New spokes all round

- Polished wheel centres

- New Dunlop 19” TT100 tires

- Electrostatic paint all (including swinging arm)

- Fuel tank and side covers painted professionally Candy Red (Interstate)

- O∆A 7816 Greek government De-commission number

- 00127. 850 Headstock batch code

Fuel tank: Interstate. Steel

Exhaust system:

- New front pipes - original

- New silencers with "Norton" logo engraved on them

Kick starter: New from the 850 model for easier starting

Centre and side stand and bolts: New

Instruments: Speedo and Rev counter

Professionally rebuilt by Ashley Pople (Speedo repairs) in the UK.

Fenders:

- New stainless front fender

- New stainless rear fender

Seat: Black interstate. New from Andover Norton
