Description

This combo was last on the road in 1995 having been restored by a previous owner. Due to work commitments. I had to leave it in a friend's barn; the friend became ill and the barn fell into a state of disrepair with the BSA left inside. I have recently recovered the outfit and it is now for sale. as a restoration project. As can be seen from the photographs all the tinware is present and solid. although there is some surface rust. The chrome on the levers. bars and silencer is in a bad state. but these parts are readily available. This would be an easy restoration due to the large number of spares available. but I think that it is largely a cleaning and painting operation.
The small. single seat Viper side-car is believed to have been made in Cheltenham by VP Sheet Metal Ltd.. an off-shoot of the Variable Pitch Propeller Company. The aluminium skin has a few thumbnail-size areas of corrosion and the interior plywood lining has de-laminated. This side-car is believed to be of the same vintage as the motorcycle as they were only made from 1947 to 1952.
The 500cc. single cylinder side-valve engine was running nicely. although the magneto insulation used to break down when hot. The engine started easily again when cool. The gearbox and clutch were working as intended. The rod-operated brakes worked to MoT standards back in 1995. but I don't think they were ever serious stoppers. particularly with a side-car and passengers! The engine has not seized and turns over with compression.
I will be pleased to answer any questions and supply more photographs. but I do not pretend to be an authority on these machines. There was a V5. in my name. which has since been mislaid during a house move. A replacement has been requested. The green logbook is present. The rare and valuable registration number is included in the sale!
I can deliver. on a trailer. within 100 miles of my home for pre-paid fuel costs (non profit making!). Viewing welcome.
