Description
A Very Special XR1200X
I have experimented and modified this machine over a number of years and now it is time to part with her. The bike is well known in XR1200 Owners Group and it is the second most powerful XR in the country (the first being a very strong 1450 build). This is a very well sorted XR and cost a fortune to put together. Available at an extremely low cost compared to the vast sums spent on her.
SPEC:2011 XR1200X with Custom Tangerine Candy Metalflake paint. Hammer 1250 conversion with ported and valved heads with Red Shift 575 cams. TorqueHammerII exhaust & Twin HPA airbox & Boz tuned(108 HP 95lbs tq). Custom Chrome mirror extenders and clutch lite XS. 37949-98A clutch spring. BiTubo piggy back rear shocks. Ex-race PVM wheels (17" Fr) with Brembo discs. FS brake lines. Scotty Mod (gearing modification). Quick action throttle tube with Biltwell Kung Fu grips. Rick-B bolt cover. LED Headlight(a real must for night riding). Led Turn Signals on FS brackets. FS Tail Tidy. orbin Gunfighter & Lady. fibreglass front fender & belly pan. Ventura Luggage system and a HD sport screen. Bike will come with ex-race Harris rear paddock stand and Ventura luggage system. The tyres are at their limit but I have a pair of scrubbed in Dunlop D211's ready to go on. Bear in mind. a stock XR puts out about 80HP with 75lb torque.
Engine Build:Used Hammer heads. cleaned and remachined to take the 15* 1250 pistons.
Red Shift 575 cams
Hammer pushrods
Hammer 1250 cylinders. and Buell Thunderstorm style pistons
Cometic MLS gaskets.
Head Quarters Black Op lifters.
Direct Link key required for remapping the ECMFrom Boz at Powerglides:"So. here are my thoughts on this build. As others have already documented theirs. I won't give a blow by blow account on how it was done. other than some relevant pointers.
Regarding the compression question. I don't know precisely. I had a lengthy. and very helpful. conversation with Dan at Hammer. who had originally done these heads. in order to figure out what pistons to order. I knocked my burette off of the bench and broke it. so didn't cc them. Neither did I do a compression test following the excitement of the dyno runs. However. a well educated guess would be around 10. 5. It starts very easily anyhow. No doubt Art will pop back up sometime to visit the chip shop. so I'll do this at a later date.
Having made a time slot. the plan was for Art to come up Saturday morning. stay in a B&B overnight. and go home Sunday night. but it didn't quite work out that way.
I had a dealer turn up in the morning to collect one of the new 2014 Project Rushmore Streetglides that I had been experimenting with. so I hadn't managed to get in front of the game by having the head machining and assembly done.
Anyhow. the XR top end is easy to get off. especially as I have the service tools for the oil lines. It's still a little fiddly. but way easier than using sharp sticks to release the clips.
Cam cover is a PITA though. although the oil lines can be all disconnected without removing the starter motor like the manual suggests.
The intake cam lobes had already been relieved. but due to variations in the castings. they needed further work to clear the main bearing in Art's cases.
All four of the lifter bore housings needed clearancing. but the anti rotation devices all cleared easily. as did the lifters around the cam journal bores when in their lowest position resting on the cam base circles.
I always pressurise new lifters prior to installation. to get the air out. Leaving them soaking in oil over night doesn't work. and this can be simply achieved by using a pressure oil can with a machined nozzle. to force oil into the feed hole. The small amount of assembly oil used at the manufacturing stage is not adequate to always prevent lifter damage on initial start up.
Prior to initial start up I spin the motor over on the starter for a few bursts until the oil light goes out (with plugs out). On initial start up there was a small amount of lifter noise for less than a second. and I ran a few heat cycles.
I do all my break ins on the dyno. as I can easily monitor temperatures. rpm. throttle position. and engine load. I also have the benefit of plenty of cooling air. and I tune as I go so I can keep a proper AFR in the areas that I am running the engine.
So. late Sunday afternoon. with 5 dyno miles. we had an oil leak from the front exhaust pushrod tube. Hey ho. sh*t happens. so off the dyno and back on the bench. Took just 30 minutes to get it apart. but didn't have a spare set of O rings. Another night in the B&B for Art.
Fortunately the new local dealer had them in stock. so after having to machine a set of cylinders "while you wait" for another shop owner. I picked up Art from his lodgings. drove down to the dealer and picked up the O rings. Couldn't see anything wrong with the leaking one. it wasn't pinched or split.
Back to the workshop. and the motor was back up and running in 45 minutes.
Back on the dyno again. and no more hitches. Cams are no noisier than the stock ones. probably a lighter noise.
With the rings bedded in. and all but the high load/low rpm areas dialled in. time for some power runs.
This was a rare Eureka moment. That motor picks up really quick. it just explodes into life. Art and I were grinning big time.
Numbers came out better than I expected. I was guessing 90 tq and low 100s hp. Interesting tq curve shape as well. Initially it dipped. but I worked the timing and fuel to flatten it out. Power is all in by 6700.
I am really impressed with this. Throttle response is instant from any position and rpm level. even with the dyno roller loaded and the Scotty mod primary gearing.
It's results like this that me grateful for being able to do this stuff for a living. Only thing that would of made me happier is if it was my XR. Hmmmm. "
All in all a very good condition XR1250X with exceptional performance with a host of extra goodies. Bargain buy for any enthusiast at this price. The secret to buying a used XR is buying one with as many aftermarket goodies as possible. it doesn't get much better than this.
Go on. you know you want to.
