Description
A great running example of a 1920s Indian Scout.
Engine cases are early-to-mid '20s, cam case and oil pump are mid '20s. Number side case came from Sweden thus the unconventional engine number. I put the engine together using new pins, bearings, and housings in the bottom end. The flywheels and rods are excellent 741 Scout, so displacement is 30.5ci/ 500cc. Cylinders, valves, collars, keepers, pistons, heads, and intake manifold are also original Indian 741 Scout. Cylinders are original bore, fresh valve job, and NOS piston rings with bottom ring left out. Springs and valve covers are nice reproduction early Scout. Cams are new Sport Scout lobes with nice original gears and shafts. I set up the oil pump to feed the pinion shaft directly. This setup gets plenty of oil to the bottom end. To control oiling there is a shutoff petcock on the oil tank. The carburetor is a clean Linkert M18 with a reproduction Indian script cover. 12 volt gel battery ignition with dual coil, works perfectly, 20 degrees fixed advance. Pull the fuse on top of the battery to kill the engine.
Transmission is 1925-27 with excellent gears. Shifter lid has been tightened up and shifts are easy and crisp with no tendency to pop out of gear. Clutch and primaries are in great shape, the clutch engages smoothly and doesn't slip. Primary covers are original 1920-21 and have no lettering, throwout worm and bearing are late '30s. Output sprocket and chain are new. A nice generator drive is bolted in place and ready for a pulley. I'm including an original drive pulley. I fabricated the kickarm and quarter gear quadrant, it works great. I'm including a decent original kickarm with good teeth. Pinion gear and ratchet are original 101 Scout.
Frame lower cradle portion is original Indian 1920-22. The seat post is slightly curved rearward as original for 1920-22 and there was a bolt-on kicker post. I've brazed a post in place. The casting under the seat is original Indian mid-'20s. The axle plates are original Indian 741 pieces trimmed to early Scout shape. I fabricated any missing pieces and put everything together, welded and brazed.
Frontend is original early-to-mid '20s Indian Scout beam with '30s Chief rockers. I fabricated the rest. Action is smooth.
Tank and fenders are 1920-23 reproduction. Reproduction chainguard included.
Seat is Cushman pan with generic beehive springs. Cover is dark blue leather.
Lights are not original but look decent on the bike. Neither light is wires. Mounts are fabricated items.
Foot boards are accurate 101 Scout reproductions. Clutch and brake pedals are repaired/ modified original Indian. I copied and fabricated the rear stand.
Handlebars are original '46-48 Indian Chief with fabricated risers and Hollywood bar.
I'm including a new 12 volt mini generator with bracket I fabricated.
Rear wheel, brake, and sprocket are in good shape and are mid '50s Triumph. The chain is new. Front wheel is of unknown manufacture but turns true, with good bearings. Tires are OLD Avon 4.00X18 but hold air and they don't bother me- they look cool.
Frame pieces, primaries, engine cases, sheetmetal, and frontend average around 1923 so I'm calling it a 1923. Engine number is clear- 7148. I will supply a notarized bill-of-sale referencing this motorcycle as--
****1923 Indian Scout vin# 7148****
ATTENTION - this is not a numbers matching motorcycle. It was not a barn-find. It is not restored. You may not agree that it is a 1923. The engine number is 7148. There is NO WARRANTY. This Scout starts, runs, shifts, and is an ABSOLUTE BLAST to ride. You may not feel or experience the same feeling I do. That's on YOU not me.... just saying :-)
This DEFINITELY IS a motorcycle consisting of at least 60% original Indian parts :-)
I'd like to be paid by bank-to-bank transfer. Or cash in person. Period. I don't need a deposit to prove you want it- simply pay for it and it's yours.
Shipping is up to YOU. I'm not unreasonable and may be able to assist, but I do work full time and have a family.... and I'm gone to church on Sundays.
This Scout is in Apache Jct, Arizona. Yeah it's hot and dry here.
I will provide a notarized bill-of-sale referencing the engine number in the picture. But to be clear - there is no title.
