Description
This is a numbers-matching 1968 A65L Lightning. For those familiar with these years, you'll notice that, except for the front brake, this bike resembles a '67. Many consider '67 to be the best year for looks—I have to agree.
Here's the difference: in '67, the tank had different paint lines compared to '66 and earlier years, giving it a similar look to the Triumph slimline tank. It also retained the smaller, cool 3D BSA emblems and was the last year for the twist-lock gas cap. In '68 and later, BSA switched to large, pot-metal emblems that were less proportional to the tank. '67 was also the last year for the beehive-style taillight, which was replaced in '68 with a less attractive design.
When I purchased this bike, the previous owner had converted it into a café racer using an ugly, cheap tank, fenders, seat, and exhaust. While I have nothing against café racers when done right, this one was in poor taste. I bought the bike at a good price and set it aside for a future project.
Months later, by sheer luck, I found an ad for '67 BSA parts. The seller was converting his original low-mileage '67 A65 into a café racer—what a coincidence! I bought his original parts, including the gas tank (with original paint and pinstriping), the seat (with its perfect original cover), complete front and rear fenders with taillight, and a full original exhaust. All chrome on these parts is original and nice, though not perfect. Everything is OEM BSA, not aftermarket. I repainted the side covers and chain guard using PPG paint. The frame was already red when I got the bike, with a finish that seems as durable as powder coating.
Additional details:
- The wheels are new Sun rims with stainless spokes from Buchanan's.
- Tires are new Avons.
- Carbs are new.
- Wassell ignition is new.
- The battery is weak and will need replacement.
I've only put about 60 miles on it, and it runs, shifts, stops, and sounds great—no smoke or unusual noises. The speedo was frozen when I got it, so I replaced it with a nice original Smiths unit showing 700 miles. I am not trying to pass this off as a 700-mile bike; I have no idea of the true mileage.
The registration is current and good until September 2022, and the title is clear in my name. Cash or money order only—no PayPal. I can deliver to a shipper if needed or possibly meet halfway within a reasonable distance.
I know this description is long, but I felt the bike needed some explaining. If you have further questions, call me. If you're in the area, feel free to stop by for a look or a ride if interested.
