Description

Intro: For your consideration is this nut and bolt full cosmetically AND mechanically restored 1965 BSA Lightning A65 650CC Cafe Racer. This motorcycle was restored by me in 2017, essentially presents and rides as new, and has only been ridden approximately 28 miles since restoration. It has a mild Cafe Racer look with the larger Spitfire tank (steel) and Cafe Racer seat/tail with BSA logo. The motor is from 1965 and the frame is from 1966. I have the motor matching Wisconsin title in my name. I am a BSA nut and have been restoring motorcycles as a winter hobby during my retirement for 20 years! The level of quality of paintwork, details, originality, and mechanical condition should meet the needs of the most detailed collector.
This Lightning is a twin carb 650CC parallel twin. The carbs have been upgraded to Amal Concentrics. It has a two into one exhaust, velocity stacks, high edge alloy rims. The intention of this build was to have a beautiful, exciting, and fun rider with a Cafe Racer look.
I have limited storage space, too many motorcycles, and want to continue the hobby of restoring thus I am selling a few bikes from my collection. I am selling my 1964 BSA Cyclone, 1967 BSA Royal Star, and 1965 BSA Lightning Cafe, all 10/10 fully cosmetic and restored bikes. Provided is extensive video footage, photos, and details so you can see just how nice these motorcycles are.

Please view the video which shows this BSA in detail. At 12:20 the Lightning is shown. The cosmetics are shown in detail and the bike is shown running and starting. This footage was taken in September of 2021.
Condition: As stated, this BSA is essentially like a brand new motorcycle. It has been completely restored mechanically and cosmetically in 2017 and has traveled approximately 28 miles since the restoration. It has been kept in my climate controlled garage since restoration. The motor was professionally restored by a British bike specialist. The engine was in great shape initially. The cases were split and engine completely gone through. The pistons were good but new rings installed, cylinders were honed, valves reground, parts were media blasted, Amal concentric carbs rebuilt, carb slides restored/resleeved professionally by a company in Washington, etc. The carbs have been synched, timing has been set, and motor completely gone through and tuned, and is fully sorted. There is some light smoking on startup. The gearbox was in very good shape prior and received basic servicing. When downshifting from 2nd into 1st, there sometimes is some finagling needed for a successful shift. The inner timing cover gasket could use replacement due to a drip of transmission oil. Forks have been fully rebuilt with new bushings and new seals. The wheels received new stainless spokes and new K70 Dunlop tires. Rear shocks are new, all cables are new, battery is new, wire harness, etc. It has electronic ignition, new coils, solid state rectifier, and lights. The speedometer and tachometer are new reproduction. The bike is a blast to ride.
Cosmetically the bike looks as new. All aluminum has been polished. All chrome has either been rechromed or replaced. The tank is new and is steel, not fiberglass. The tank paintwork was professionally done. The bright red looks stunning. The paintwork is of premium quality, has much depth, and looks as it should. The tank has been sealed. The side covers are in great shape. Seat cover, seat foam, seat tray, gaiters, emblems, grips, rubbers, and etc. are all new. The level of quality and detail on this BSA should meet the needs of the enthusiast looking for an impressively clean fun rider.
Conclusion: The BSA Lightning is an iconic model! As shown, this example is of impressive cosmetic and mechanical condition. The amount of detailed work, refurbished parts, and new parts is quite extensive. I take the detail and properness of my restorations very seriously but of course do it for enjoyment. This is not a motorcycle I truly want to sell but need the space. I am hoping an enthusiast can become the next caretaker of this beautiful machine.
The BSA Cyclone, Lightning Cafe, and Royal Star are located at my residence in West Bend, WI 53090. I do not mind helping you with shipping logistics and am willing to sell to out of country buyers.
