Description
1960 Norton 500cc Dominator 88, beautiful condition, matching no's V5c
Here is a fabulous example of the slimline Dominator 88 from 1960. This bike has been restored to a very high standard around 6 or 7 years ago and hasn't had a great deal of use since but is easy to start and in excellent running / riding order. The engine sounds fine, first kick easy starter. Very lively for a 500, the sweetness of the smaller engine size compensates for the slight compromise in top speed compared with a 650 but there's not much difference in performance acceleration wise through the gears up to and including normal classic bike cruising speeds. The gears and clutch are all good, the brakes (front being a twin leading shoe) are excellent. Smith's 120mph chronometric speedometer is working well. 12 volt with trusty Zener diode alternator charging system is working well also and lights are excellent. The bike really is a pleasure to ride. Trademark Norton featherbed handling, everything feels just right. You can tell this bike has been very nicely put back together by an experienced enthusiast. The bike comes with V5C registration doc. Registration number is YFF 262 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Date of registration is given as 5th May 1960. Frame & engine numbers are the matching originals, 89066. These are clearly genuine factory stampings. The bike is registered for Historic (free) road tax and is of course MOT exempt. Cosmetically the bike is in beautiful, pristine show condition. It has been restored to a very high standard by the previous keeper who was only selling due to age and health issues sadly catching up with him. The stove enamel on the frame is beautiful high quality, as is the enamel on the tank which is really superb. (Tank is also very clean inside and has not been linered). All bright work is excellent, there is not a spot of even the lightest rust on the bike! Wheel rims are both flanged genuine Dunlop alloys in very good condition with new stainless spokes. Front tyre is an as new Avon SM ribbed, rear is 50% worn Avon SM MKII. Mudguards are stainless. As new seat, As new exhaust system. Excellent centre-stand and excellent (rare) genuine Norton side-stand fitted. All in all this is a beautiful, easy to live with featherbed Norton up and running well, it just needs to be used regularly and enjoyed.
