Description
1928 Francis Barnett model 9 172cc.
Here is a fabulous little vintage lightweight Francis Barnett “Built-like-a-bridge” 172cc Villiers twin port, 3 speed with V5C.
The bike is an excellent runner and rides really nicely. It is very smooth and reasonably lively for its day. Starts well from cold and is even easier when warm. The engine sounds excellent mechanically. It ticks over really well especially when warm. I have put some 2-stroke oil in the fuel to be safe but the auto lubrication (pressurised tank) system seems to be working OK.
Gears and clutch are all good, no jumping out of gear. (Nice little Albion 3-speed box).
Lights are working, rear seems much brighter than the front I suspect bulb ratings are incorrect. (front is just a glow).
The bike has a quality feel about it, these were not cheap and cheerful as such, they were very well made lightweights of their day, favored by people probably new to powered transport in the 20's Brakes are OK, front a little dull but rear is excellent.
All in all this is a very pleasant and practical vintage motorcycle, ideal for vintage events.
The bike comes with up to date V5C, registration WC1446 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Registered as a Historic vehicle, free road tax, MOT exempt. Frame and engine numbers match the V5C doc.
Cosmetically the bike is showing some age, but is generally in nice old vintage bike condition. Paint on the frame is a bit thin in places and there's some light rust here and there coming through. Enamel on the tank is very good and the tank has been linered with a modern dark grey sealant.
Rims have good enamel and the spokes are clean and very good. Tyres are unused looking Dunlop K70's front and rear. I suspect they are quite old though but I doubt they'd receive too much stress on this little bike. Vintage saddle is in good order. No fin damage on engine. Rear stand in good condition. Toolbox buckle straps are both broken.
Exhaust system is very sound but there is light rust bubbling through the nickel plate. So if you're looking for an entry level vintage motorcycle to get you involved in the events such as Banbury or just a fun machine to tinker with and potter about on this very sound, very sweet running Francis Barnett is ideal.
