Description
Circa 1943 BSA WM20, 500cc with V5C doc.
Here is a nice project for anyone wanting to rebuild a WW2 army bike. Exact year and provenance is not known because, as with many ex-army machines, especially those deployed abroad, the frame number and or frame has been changed and / or re-stamped at some point. The engine number does state WM20 as well as two serial numbers! Apart from this lack of provenence the bike is reasonably complete except for the primary chaincases and front mudguard. The engine was removed by the previous keeper not long after purchase some 26 years ago and was completely rebuilt by him. It looks very good and nicely put together externally, but well - worth a check over, as with any abandoned project the workmanship is of an unknown standard.
The bike comes with a V5C doc, apparently civvy registered in 1963.
Frame number on the bike matches the V5C (D734518) and the engine 148219, see pics.
The general cosmetic condition is sound but not pretty and is ripe for conversion back to full army spec. Tank is in beautiful condition inside, dry and clean and has not been linered. Speedometer is the correct WD type with bezel-locking grub screw. There is no fin damage on the cylinder, (apart from 1 very very tiny chip). The cylinder head fitted to the engine is a later alloy type but the cast iron type is included. Footrest assembly is present (not visible on main picture). Rims and spokes are very sound, chrome on the rims could possibly clean up well. Tyres look to be unused, they are Mitas period style.
