Description
1954 Triton, Norton 88 Triumph T100 500cc V5c.
Here is a lively little Triton in touring trim but absolutely typical of the Golden Era of British biking.
The bike is basically a standard Dominator 88 with a 500cc Triumph motor with T100 ally head and barrel. It makes a great combination. Nice and light, lively but not over-stressed or badly behaved, this is a sweet and very very smooth bike to ride. Lovely comfortable riding position, (Who wants rear sets & clip-ons these days?!!)
The bike handles beautifully as you would expect for a wideline featherbed. Brakes front and rear are both excellent. Gears and clutch are spot on. Speedometer is working well. Charging system is excellent 12 volt set up with the old-faithful “Zener Diode” to regulate. Lights are really good and even the horn is quite loud!
Easy to start, the engine runs really well. A little loud on the high level peashooter exhaust system but quiet mechanically and very smooth. There's no smoke and the engine is very oil tight.
The bike is registered as a Norton and comes with V5C doc, registration 853 XWH. Frame number is J122 58210, engine number is 5T 44218. Date of registration is 21st June 1954. It is Historic Class, so free road tax and MOT exempt.
Cosmetically the bike is generally good but used / older looking and far from pristine. The enamel on the frame is old but respectable, touched in and marked in places and home painted I would say, not proper stove enamel. Tank does have excellent red enamel. It would appear that some sealant has been applied internally to the bottom of the tank at some point. This seems sound. Rims are flanged Akront alloy rear and unbranded flanged alloy front, both with stainless steel spokes. Front tyre is a Dunlop K81 Roadmaster, like new and rear is an Avon SM which also looks practically as new.
The exhaust system is tidy and sounds superb! The seat is a good sound but quite old looking standard Dommie type. There is no fin damage on the engine. Excellent side & centre stands are fitted.
This is a great little bike. I'm not sure about the colour scheme especially the black tank panels but it what someone wanted. If you buy this bike you can ride it while at the same time enjoying collecting the parts you want to make the bike truly your own. That's what this type of old Brit bike is all about! Don't miss this great little 500cc Triton, an easy to live with café racer (kind of) with great potential for further improvement / refinement. Selling as a very good runner.
