Description
For sale my Laverda Triple. It isn't exactly what it appears to be at first glance. I want my bad experience to hopefully help others avoid suffering the same fate. the bike is for sale but this time it will be described accurately!please read my story.
Please be very careful if you are considering buying a motorcycle from abroad. (or in fact any motorcycle from anywhere. without viewing it first!) despite asking many questions and making many checks on the company I was dealing with. My assumption that dealing with a reputable dealer would lead to a pleasant safe transaction was wrong. I still came a cropper!I know there will be people out there that will have negative comments to make but I can't help that. If just one person can benefit from my experience. I will consider this exercise worthwhile. I bought this bike. described as a genuine Jota. from a 'genuine' dealer in Germany. obviously in need of some restoration work. y intention was to strip the bike right down and restore it back to it's original colour and spec over a period of time. I was assured it was a matching frame and engine numbers bike. with a good strong engine. so it appeared to be a good starting point. However the bike was not as described and I am now offering this bike for sale againas what it actually is. rather than what I was told it was!
This is the story:
I BOUGHT THIS BIKE JULY LAST YEAR
I BOUGHT IT FROM A 'REPUTABLE' DEALER IN GERMANY
and I dealt with the top man himself Mr. M W
HIS DESCRIPTION IN HIS AD WAS THAT IT WAS A 'GENUINE JOTA' (I know there is a lot of debate about 'what is a Jota'. but the fact I was told it was a triple in need of restoration complete with it's original matching numbers frame and engine ticked my boxes) I ASKED HIS LOTS OF QUESTIONS. HE ASSURED ME IT WAS A GREAT BIKE. HE EVEN SENT ME TWO VIDEOS OF THE BIKE RUNNING. HIS WEBSITE BOASTS OF ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC CUSTOM MADE BIKES. SOME OVER 100. 00 EUROS! I did do my homework. He suggested the following. (copied and pasted from his email) You can also google my name M W. to see that we are a serious company. I've built bikes for Sebastian Vettel. Kimi Raikkonen. David Coulthard. Brad Pitt and so on. Just google it and you will find tons of picture :-)
Regards M
I EVEN RANG HIS COMPANY AND SPOKE TO THEM TO CHECK THEIR CREDENTIALS. IT ALL ADDED UP. SO I CONFIDENTLY PAID 'GENUINE JOTA' MONEY FOR THIS BIKE AND HAD IT COLLECTED FROM GERMANY VIA COURIER. THE BIKE ARRIVED. I WAS SO BUSY WITH WORK AT THE TIME. I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO LOOK AT IT UNTIL SOME WEEKS LATER. WITH A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF MINE. WHO IS INTO LAVERDAS TOO. WE IMMEDIATELY SPOTTED THE FOLLOWING:-ENGINE (NO 7926) IS A SERIES 2 180 ENGINE. 4C CAMS FITTEDHOWEVER THE FRAME IS AN EARLIER SERIES 1 CDI FRAME. WHICH HAD BEEN MADE TO LOOK LIKE A LATER FRAME. WITH THE SHOCKS IN THE CORRECT ANGLED POSITION. COURTESY OF SOME WELDED BRACKETS. OBVIOUSLY NOT UP TO THE CORRECT STANDARD see new pics added recently I THINK THEY MAY BE RGS CARBS TOO AS THEY HAVE RGS INLETS. BUT MARCUS WALTZ ASSURED ME THIS WAS A CORRECT MATCHING NUMBERS BIKE!THE LATER BIKES ARE STAMPED BY LAVERDA ON THE HEADSTOCK AND MARCUS HAD SENT ME PICS OF THIS. CLOSER INSPECTION SHOWS THE ORIGINAL NUMBERS ON THE FRAME BRACKET NEAR THE FOOT PEG HAD BEEN GROUND OUT. SO OBVIOUSLY THE NUMBERS ON THE HEADSTOCK ARE NOT ORIGINAL. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG. I AM NOT SUGGESTING MARCUS DID THIS. IN FACT I ACTUALLY KNOW HE DIDN'T. MY INFORMATION. (after a little digging) IS THAT ALLEGEDLY. HE BOUGHT IT LIKE THIS AND HAVING NOTICED THESE ISSUES WAS COMPENSATED.
I HAVE REPORTED THESE FACTS TO THE SELLER. (WEEKS AND WEEKS AGO) I ASKED HIM IF HE WOULD GIVE ME SOME SORT OF FINANCIAL REFUND AS IT WAS NOT WHAT HE TOLD ME IT WAS AND AS A DEALER I THOUGHT HE SHOULD OFFER SOME SORT OF RECOMPENSE. I ALSO ASKED HIM IF HE WAS NOT PREPARED TO DO THIS. THEN WOULD HE TAKE THE BIKE BACK AND REFUND ME. ON THE BASIS THAT IT WAS (grossly) MISREPRESENTED WHEN SOLD. IN FAIRNESS HE DID REPLY. HE INSISTS HE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT. SOLD IT IN GOOD FAITH AND WAS LOSING MONEY ON IT ANYWAY (which I now very much doubt)HE DID HOWEVER OFFER TO MAKE ME UP A COUPLE OF NICE BRACKETS WHICH I COULD HAVE WELDED TO THE FRAME TO TAKE THE SHOCKS!HE NOW TELLS ME HE IS NOT AN EXPERT IN LAVERDAS AND HAS SOLD HIS BUSINESS 3 YEARS AGO. STRANGE THAT! HIS RECENT EBAY AD FOR A GREEN MIRAGE / RGS PROJECT FOR £3K STATED HE HAS BEEN DEALING IN LAVERDAS FOR YEARS AND THAT HE KNOWS THEM INSIDE OUT!HIS RECENT FACEBOOK PAGE STATES HE HAS JUST BUILT A SENNA COMMEMORATION GUZZI!
THE WEEKS HAVE GONE BY. MY EMAILS ARE NOW BEING IGNORED. SO HERE IT IS FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE!I AM AWARE OF THE SAYING CAVEAT EMPTOR. (LATIN FOR BUYER BEWARE)BUT I FELT I HAD ASKED ALL THE RELEVANT QUESTIONS AND AS I WAS DEALING WITH SUCH A QUALITY DEALER. WITH SUCH HIGH PROFILE CLIENTS. I WOULD BE FAIRLY SAFE BUYING A BIKE DESCRIBED AS A 'GENUINE JOTA'WHETHER IT WAS AN ACTUAL JOTA OR NOT WAS IRRELEVANT TO ME. I HAD A JOTA MANY YEARS AGO AND REMEMBER ASKING MR SLATER IF HE COULD VERIFY IT'S AUTHENTICITY. HE SAID HE COULDN'T BE 100% SURE. FROM MEMORY. SOME PAPERWORK HAD BEEN LOST AND A LOT OF HIS RECORDS WITH IT. SO IF HE COULDN'T TELL ME. THEN NO ONE CAN!IT WAS THE FACT THAT IT WAS A TRIPLE WITH AN ORIGINAL MATCHING FRAME AND ENGINE THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO ME. THE BIKE THAT TURNED UP WAS NOT THE BIKE THAT HAD BEEN DESCRIBED. I AM SURE ANYBODY TREATED LIKE THIS WOULD BE UPSET!TIME HAS PASSED FROM WHEN I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THE BIKE UNTIL NOW. FIRSTLY BECAUSE I HAD A LOT ON MY PLATE AT WORK. I DIDN'T ACTUALLY LOOK AT THE BIKE STRAIGHT AWAY AND SECONDLY BECAUSE I CONTACTED THE SELLER TO GIVE HIM THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT. WHICH HE WAS NOT PREPARED TO DO. HE WOULD NOT TAKE THE BIKE BACK HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME SOME FORM OF RECOMPENSE DUE TO THE INNACURATE DESCRIPTION. SO WHAT DO I DO? ENTER INTO AN INTERNATIONAL LEGAL BATTLE? THAT COULD COST SEVERAL JOTA'S WORTH OF CASH! OR AT LEAST LET OTHERS KNOW. SO THEY MAY BENEFIT FROM MY MISFORTUNE. I DID WARN M W THAT I WOULD DO THIS AND GAVE HIM MANY WEEKS TO RECONSIDER. AS A PRIVATE PERSON BUYING OFF A DEALER I THINK MY ACTIONS WERE FAIR.
IN VIEW OF THE ABOVE I FEEL I NO LONGER WISH TO RESTORE THIS BIKE
SO I AM OFFERING IT AS A PROJECT COMPLETE WITH IT'S ISSUES AS STATED ABOVE! I do have the two video's of the bike running. sent to me by Marcus Walz when I bought the bike off him. I can forward these to any interested parties. please let me know ALTERNATIVELY. IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST I MAY BREAK IT AS THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY SOME TASTY BITS THERE!
It does have a very rare series 2 Laverda 180 engine fitted. Along with 4c cams and a hydraulic clutch. Genuine Laverda rear sets. Thick web wheels. Jota bars. Jota hump seat. All the correct switch gear. Clocks. Exhaust. Brake and clutch master cylinders etc. that you'd expect to see on a jota.
I WILL ADD MORE DETAILS IN DUE COURSE
IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED IN THIS BIKE. EITHER AS A PROJECT. OR TO BREAK. PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL
I DID RING HIS COMPANY TO VERIFY A FEW DETAILS AND RECEIVED THIS REPLY
Hi
thanx for your message. No problem. I understand you!
Michael told me that you called here in the shop. But I was in the workshop rolling out the Jota from where it sat the last 9 month. I took out the old gas. put in some new one and it fired up right on the first push of the button :-) That sound is really amazing. I couldn't resist and rode it around the block without helmet :-)
Below please find 2 short low resolution video clips I've done 5 minutes ago. while I put the Jota in our showroom.
Feel free to email me with any further questions you may have.
CheersM
I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE INCORRECT FRAME COLOUR WAS TOLD SOMEONE HAD PAINTED IT BLACK. OVER THE ORIGINAL SILVER. NO PROBLEM THEN! (copy and pasted reply. I just took the price out)
Yes you are right. someone painted the frame black. The original color is silver.
I don't wanna let the bike go for below x. I think this is a fair price for a complete and genuine Jota.
M
I ASKED ABOUT THE STATE OF THE MOTOR AND THE BIKE GENERALLY
No. I don't think it need an engine rebuild. the motor runs pretty strong and sounds healthy. It seems also pretty much dry. no oil leaks or so. The body work would need a new paint and I would recommend new tires as well as they look like they are from the 80's ;-) The bike is totally complete (except the "JOTA" emblem on the left side panel). no parts are missing. Even the genuine Jota exhaust is still on the bike.
M
the original ad title (copy and pasted) Genuine Laverda Jota
If only that was true!
I AM GETTING LOTS OF COMMENTS ON WHETHER THE LE MANS 1 IS FOR SALE.
THAT BIKE IS NOT MINE
THE PICS WITH THE LM1 ARE IN THE German WORKSHOP
HE DID OFFER IT TO ME. I HAVE JUST FOUND HIS EMAIL.
HE WANTED 7000 EUROS. I THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO MUCH
SO I DECLINED HIS OFFER
