Description
1968 Norton Atlas 750 Café Racer
Very reluctant sale. but it has to go.
I purchased the bike in 2008 and then set about a strip down and rebuild in 2010. This was completed just over a year ago. but during the rebuild period I developed a hip problem. which shows no signs of fully healing and prevents me from kick starting or riding it. As I've only managed one very short journey since completion I've taken the really tough decision to sell.
So about the bike:-
Chassis and engine number match.
It has some period café racer parts: TLS front brake (believed to be John Tickle). alloy top yoke. Dunstall rear sets. alloy carb spacers and alloy rocker covers.
Crank has previously been balanced.
Original fuel and oil tanks.
New MOT. On a SORN but Tax exempt
FD Motorcycles carried out all the paintwork. The frame is stove enamelled. They also rebuilt the top end. examined/inspected the bottom end and gearbox and also rebuilt the forks.
SRM Engineering rebuilt the front and rear hubs (skimmed and matched) and rebuilt the wheels using valanced alloy Morad/Akront rims and stainless spokes. Tyres are Avon AM26.
Motorcycle Restoration Co (as featured in current issue of Classic Bike mag) carried out the final 5% of work. checking everything out. wiring. setting up etc. and putting it thru it's MOT (last year).
Lots of new parts were used during the rebuild including twin 930 Amal carbs and control cables. twin coils fitted on stainless holder. All chains and rear sprocket. Hagon adjustable rear shocks. Unity Equipe seat and alloy mudguards. plus lots of stainless steel parts from Novil.
Negative points:-
These are purely visual. The reasets are fantastic quality (much better than modern ones) but they could do with re-plating. Rear mudguard has been scotched brighted to give a period racing look. but front hasn't been done yet. The rear light is a modern ‘classic' unit and I don't feel quite matches the rest of the look of the bike.
I've done all the hard work. spent all the money and the only thing the bike really needs doing now is being ridden. Unfortunately I can't do this and then walk the next day.
