Description
1959 VELOCETTE IN CLUBMANS 500CC VENOM SPEC. FOR RESTORATION! V5C
Here is a dream opportunity to own & restore a really sexy Velocette from the Golden days of Classic Motorcycling & Cafe Racing!
This Velocette was built to Clubman Venom spec and used regularly until around 30 years ago when the magneto failed & the bike was laid up. other than the mag the bike was in excellent running order.
It's amazing to find genuine bikes of the period that have been sleeping for 30 or more years. This example epitomises the cafe race culture of the late sixties. It is crying out to be restored and to relive its former glory!
Knowing that the mag is down I have made no attempt to get the bike running. I don't think it's a good idea to start bikes after such a long period standing. the engine will need a thorough clean out & check up before that.
That said. it turns over OK and sounds ok. The gearbox selects nicely.
The cylinder barrel is the Alfin all alloy type. There are no broken fins on the engine. Speedometer & Rev counter are both Smith's Chronometric items.
The bike comes with old style green log book and V5 doc.
The original registration. 151 YRE dates from 27th June 1959.
Frame number is RS12452. Engine number is VM1747. (both genuine factory stampings!)
Cosmetically. well what can I say! Looks like we got to it just in time! There is no actual rot on the bike but it has suffered from condensation winter after winter whist sleeping. The tank is a genuine steel item. It is very good inside but has rusted on top where a period leather tank cover had been fitted. It is only light surface rust.
The paint on the frame is just about to the end of its useful life. It could be oily rag treated but really this bike deserves better!
The wheel rims are alloys. these would of course clean up ok. The spokes are also ok. just dull and blackened with age. The nipples have rusted.
Side stand & centre stand are in good order.
This is a super opportunity to revitalise a sporting Velocette 500. Don't miss this chance to kiss this sleeping beauty back into life!
