1937 Velocette MSS 500cc restoration project / possible KSS

Here is a superb opportunity to own & restore a reasonably sound pre-war Velocette MSS. that could be converted to a KSS (see below)

This bike has had work done in the past including new rims and a repaint job. It has clearly stood for a very long time since.

The engine turns over OK and feels OK.

I haven't been able to go through the gears. the main foot-change lever is missing and it's difficult to turn the lever on the box by hand. It's not seized. There is no electrical wiring on the bike and control cables etc. are in poor condition / adjustment.

The bike comes with V5C registration certificate. registration YXG 889. Frame number S3004. engine MSS 2200. Both of these numbers are genuine factory stamping and match the V5C document.

The bike is registered for Historic Vehicle class (free tax) and is of course pre-60 MOT exempt.

The cosmetic condition of the bike is actually not that bad. If you wanted a bike with the older look it would certainly clean up to a reasonably respectable level. That said to make concours it would need an entirely fresh paint job etc.

The paint on the frame is good & sound. only minor chips here & there. Paint on the tank & tinware etc. is decent and good enough to be practical.

Exhaust pipe is good (some minor dents) Silencer would polish up quite nicely.

Wheel rims are replacement chrome items which don't look right but are in decent order and would also clean up nicely. The spokes are painted black. There is a chunk out of the top fin of the barrel on the drive side & a small piece out of the top fin of the barrel on the timing side.

All in all this is a good basis for a pre-war Velocette rebuild either as an MSS or as a KSS. (I have a good good KSS MKII engine for sale. Please contact me for more information.)
