Description
1965 Velocette Thruxton 500
VMT102 was supplied by Whitakers of Blackpool on 30th June 1965, invoice number 73893.
Here we have what can only be described as probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the very first road-going Velocette Thruxton, the one after engine number VMT101, which, from all accounts, was kept back by the Velo factory. This particular bike is 100% genuine with matching numbers and has the engine VMT102.
The bike's history, according to Mr. R. J. Thurston of the Velocette Thruxton Machine Register, states:
"Dear xxxxxx,
According to my records, your Velocette Thruxton details are correct. The frame and gearbox numbers fitted to VMT all appear to tie in correctly with bikes before and after on the register. The factory records show that this machine was dispatched from the factory on 30th June 1965 to dealer Whitakers of Blackpool on invoice number 73893. A Mr. B. D. Bartlett of Evesham was the first owner, who purchased the motorcycle on 11th September 1965.
Yours sincerely,
Raynor J. Thurston."
The bike has been painstakingly restored at great expense and time by a very skilled family member, who has detailed the bike as it more or less left the factory back in its day. We have, as you can imagine, a folder of receipts and bills relating to the build over a period of time. The last keeper, from whom we acquired the vehicle, has told us that his brother purchased the bike from a Mr. Fred Cheshire, a Velocette dealer and enthusiast in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, back in 1973, after the first keeper, Mr. B. D. Bartlett, part-exchanged the Velo for a Suzuki GT750 Kettle.
Here are the numbers again:
- Registration No: DFV 760C
- Engine No: VMT102
- Frame No: RS 18347
- Gearbox No: 12-11436
NOTICE: Please do not text or email us with the message "What's your best price?" as I generally find that most people who do this are not really interested in the motorcycle. If you are seriously interested, please pick up the phone and talk to us. We would consider a part exchange, so please feel free to email us with the details. We can also deliver this bike anywhere in the world for a fee.
All payments accepted.
