Description
1979 Honda CBX 1000
I bought this bike in 2009 from a guy in Bedfordshire who had set up a business to import. restore. and sell nothing but Honda CBXs.
I believe the business was called the CBX Shop but. for whatever reason. I'm not sure it really got off the ground.
However. I was a friend of the company's chief engineer. Mark Hutton. who undertook all the restoration work on the business's bikes.
Mark is very well known. particularly in the Kawasaki world. He was also the official engine builder to the CBX Club.
I had told Mark that I wanted a really good CBX. and he told me that he would keep an eye out for a good example for me.
The bike that he found came from Detroit. It had had just one owner. and had covered less than 10.000 miles.
It was in excellent condition. but Mark still took the bike apart. cleaned and painted the engine. re-chromed all the brightwork. and re-sprayed the bodywork.
The American tail unit was replaced with a European one and. of course. the bike was converted back to full power.
I can't now remember quite why. and what the benefits were meant to be. but I was persuaded to pay a small fortune for an upgraded clutch.
I also paid for a new lookalike exhaust system. so that I could box up the original system. It was in perfect condition. and I didn't want to risk damaging it. This exhaust obviously forms part of the sale.
Since I acquired the bike. I have done less than 500 miles on it.
It was bought to form part of our small collection of iconic bikes from the sixties. seventies and eighties. It has spent most of its life with us sat up high on a pallet in our dry and overly heated warehouse.
It presents virtually as a new bike. The paint gleams. the chrome glistens. the wheels are unmarked. and the tyres are like new. (and that's because they are).
This is a totally restored bike that wants for nothing. and which has had money thrown at it to make it as good as it could be.
I am asking £15.000 for the bike.
I know full well that you can get a very rideable CBX for £10.000 or less. but this is a concours quality bike that is good enough to win prizes. It would be difficult to find any area that money could be spent on it.
The price is firm. I am not looking for offers. or to deals.
The bike is at our offices in Guildford. and can be viewed at any time. but please don't come and see it if you're not prepared to pay the asking price.
I'm sure there are experts out there who know much more than me. and who will come up with reasons why the price should be lowered. All I can say is that it won't be.
We are putting about 20 of our bikes up for sale. but will only let half of them go. so no bike has to be sold.
