Description
I've taken her out for a run in the sunshine. started 2nd kick after being unused for 7 weeks. This bike goes like a scalded cat. quite unbelievable for a 50 year old! Original 1966 BSA A65 Hornet 650 Desert Racer. Recently imported from the USA. This is the East coast variant with side exhaust pipes! Original Mandarin Red. Rare to see the early models. Normally see the later 67/68 versions in the darker Cherokee Red. Original Fibreglass tank. Still equipped with its Rev counter. Has side stand and centre stand. Matching numbers frame and engine. genuine A65HA bike. For those who don't know. the Hornet 650 was a US only bike built for desert racing. to compete with the likes of the Triumph T120TT. It was not equipped with either front or rear lights. had folding foot pegs and a higher compression performance engine.
This example is mostly original and has a great patina that restoration would surely spoil. After all they are only original once!
Mechanically the engine starts 2nd or 3rd kick. runs without fault and idles a treat! It does not rattle and does not smoke. It has had a recent service and recommission including -
2 new Amal Monobloc Carburetors. Recent electronic ignition. New Spark Plugs. Timing set up. Valve clearances adjusted. New shock absorbers. New Tachometer cable. New Tyres 3.50 x 19 front 4.00 x 18 Rear. The fibreglass tank has just been professionally lined to protect from the high levels of Ethanol in modern petrol.
Cosmetically the bike is mostly original. clean with a great patina. The side panels have been painted at some stage. It would spoil the bike I believe by restoring it!
The exhausts and fenders are in decent condition. The paintwork has wear. chips etc. as you would expect of this genre of motorcycle!
It starts. runs and rides just as it should. It sounds great and pulls like a train through all gears. It revs out cleanly and idles great. Yes it does drip a little oil. well it is a BSA and I would expect nothing less! It is of course free road fund licence. Before I get asked. no there is no paperwork or history with the bike. I can't tell you who raced it and what it won. It is what it is. a bike built for off road desert racing.
The bike has a Daytime MOT with NO ADVISORIES. I registered the bike on the 25th November last year and it's on an age related "D" plate. Obviously I have the V5 in my name and am the only UK owner. Please please no offers or trades. this bike is nearly 50 years old so is not perfect. It is however well sorted and very usable. It's an early 66 model in mandarin red so is also a rare machine ! Find another early version. it's almost impossible! Serious genuine enquiries only please call. Lets not waste each others time. you can't find. import and sort one of these rare bikes for peanuts so please don't expect that of this example. No tyre kickers. dreamers or low ballers thanks.
THIS BIKE IS REALLY QUITE A BARGAIN. YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY £4500-5000 FOR AN IMPORTED NON RUNNING BARN FIND SO THIS. PRICE FOR A FULLY MECHANICALLY FETTLED BIKE WITH MOT IS A GREAT BUY!
