Description
1950 Velocette MAC, good running project with V5C
Here is a “barn-fresh” example of one of the most refined and best built British motorcycles from the classic era – The Velocette MAC.
This light 350cc tele-rigid would have been one of the liveliest in its class during the immediate post-war years. This example has clearly been standing a long while but started easily, I think someone may have recommissioned the engine at some point in the non-too-distant past.
The engine sounds great and settles to a steady tick over. It doesn't smoke or even leak oil. I have managed a short ride on the bike, maybe ½ a mile or so on a private road. It really goes well! Really lively acceleration up to 60mph, a lot of this is down to the bike's light weight. It feels nice and steady.
Front brake is good, rear brake needs some attention but does work. (The rear brake anchor arm is too short making the brake plate in the wrong position such that it obstructs the full return of the rear stand. A brake anchor arm a couple of inches longer would solve the problem. Gears and clutch are excellent.
There is no wiring on the bike, dynamo is there c/w drive pulley but no belt. Speedo will need renovation, no drive cable fitted. Although I have ridden the bike, please note it is not roadworthy as such and will need a thorough check over to make road ready, that said it would still fall into the light restoration / sympathetic recommissioning category should a full on restoration not be desired.
The bike comes with V5C, up to date and in my name. Registration XXG 273 cannot be transferred to another vehicle. It is registered for Historic Vehicle road taxation class, so nothing to pay for road tax and it is MOT exempt. Frame number is MB 8117, engine number is MAC 8371. These are both genuine Velocette stampings and match the V5C.
Cosmetically obviously the bike is what it is. An unrestored barn find many would say ripe for restoration. The good news is though that although all paintwork is dull & thin with light rust and all bright work has lost chrome – there is no sign of any real rot or troublesome corrosion. Frame generally pretty good for unrestored, thin paint in places but no pitting or bad corrosion. Tank looks dull and scruffy but is sound and looks very good inside and has not been linered. It could do with a decent rinse out. Front wheel rim is very poor with no chrome left. Spokes are lightly rusted but probably the front wheel is serviceable. The rear wheel is in similar cosmetic condition but does have a few spokes missing, obviously rendering it un roadworthy as is. Front tyre looks to be an unused Avon SM ribbed in perfect condition. Maybe has been replaced relatively recently. Rear tyre though is very old & I would consider it scrap.
Exhaust system is sound but no chrome in evidence. Silencer is very good but no chrome. Rear stand works well, as stated earlier, rear brake torque arm needs to be longer to stop stand clashing with rear brake operating lever when returned. Saddle is old but serviceable. No broken fins on engine Good oil return All in all this is a great little project for anyone who would like a nice light weight Velo to whizz about on. I would say it's definitely ripe for restoration, Grove Classics & Velocette Owners' Club supply the parts required to keep these models on the road or to restore. Don't miss this very lively little 350cc Velocette MAC. A charming and delightful classic for everyday classic use and endless pottering around the country lanes! Selling as a running restoration project or possible sympathetic recommission job.
